Orson Scott Card wins Israel's Geffen award
December, 1999


PASTWATCH by Orson Scott Card (published in Israel by Opus Press) won the Geffen award for the Best Science Fiction book published during the Hebrew year Tashnat (5759). The awards for excellence in science fiction and fantasy were voted on by the members of ICon 99:Conflict -- the third annual Israeli SF&F Convention. The convention was held September 28 - 30, 1999 and the awards were announced at the ICon closing ceremony. The convention was organized by the Israeli Society for Science Fiction and Fantasy and Starbase 972, the Israeli Star Trek Fan Club.This is the first year the Geffen awards have been given. The award is named for the late Amos Geffen, co-founder of the Israeli Society for Science Fiction and Fantasy and editor of one of Israel's first SF book series. The award for best Fantasy book went to Swords and Deviltry by Fritz Leiber.
