I've been thinking about the plot lately and I've come up with some developments that have catapulted the plot line and opened up some of the doors that I knew where there but couldn't figure out what they opened to. I turned some interesting locations that I wanted to include in the world into huge plot elements that open up scads and scads of potential. But post importantly, I came up with the ending for the first part/book that will have enough resolution to make it worth reading all by itself, and enough loose ends to make you want to buy the next one.
I'm going to wait till i can wrap up the second part/book the same way and tie up the two parts together for a great conclusion.

Well, you don't have to wait for everything to be tied up in a neat package before you start writing something...in fact, I recommend starting before then...otherwise you might never start at all...

Agreed. A lot of things you won't be able to map out until you get to know your own characters and environments in detail. But hey, if the system works for you, do what you feel produces the best results. Posts: 487 | Registered: Mar 2008

I had a disagreement with another author on another forum whether a writer should do any worldbuilding or plot outlining at all before starting to write. His point was that these are used as an excuse to put off actually writing. I would be concerned about this. While I do think a little worldbuilding is a good thing, unlike the man I had the debate with, if you spend months or years doing nothing but worldbuilding, I would question whether this is an effective use of your time or a way of procrastinating. I can't answer this, but I would suggest you may be going to far in your worldbuilding. As has been pointed out, some things you just can't figure our until you are BIC and writing.
Congratulations that your planning has gone well. But I would suggest taking advantage of that to get down to the writing part.

Anyone who says you shouldn't spend time worldbuilding should take a look at Tolkien.
At this point I need to work on my plot because there are things I need to know before I write so I know where the writing is going. I DO have alot that I can write, but I'd like to at least get the story of the first 3 parts/books finished. Incidently I also found the ending to the second and the start of the third. Each book/part will have a different sort of theme, Evil hordes, governments being influenced, forces conspiring and sewing seeds of conflict around the world, that sort of stuff. The story of the characters is moving forward with the plot too, and I'd like to figure out where the characters end up before I write how they get there.

I know, I need to write, but I'm too self-critical. I look at pieces that I've shown to friends who have liked it and all I see is cheese.
