I like it so far. It's a good example of a how excellent plotting and clever concept can carry less than perfect writing style.

Halfway done. Again, less than perfect style on the micro level, but more than made up for by magnificent plotting, pacing, and characterization.

Too much for my meager phone connection to download. Besides, I think I'd rather read it in book form, assuming I ever get around to it.
I like Vinge's stuff. One of his stories was in the second SF magazine I ever bought. I really liked Marooned in Real Time, one of my favorite SF novels. (On the other hand, I thought a recent Hugo winner, not this but a shorter work first published in a big collected works issue, was just awful---couldn't figure out how it won, at least not on merits.)

So what's so wrong with the golden globes? (Not that I care too much about awards.) And what is so wrong with SFFWA voting on an award? Would you rather they launch a monkey into space and see which book he eats first to determine the Hugo? (Actually I'd love that.) What I'm saying is, what would be a better way in your opinion?

I've found that awards often come from the most meaningless of places.
Not saying they're undeserved. Just saying that it's impossible to truly judge everything objectively based on their merit. It's one of those thing where I complain that life is imperfect, but I have no solution for how it could be better... I hate those things.

Just finished the book. Regardless of whether the Hugos are worth anything, this book deserves an award. Read it.

Ah I knew someone would show up with a flame. LOL
The SFWA doesn't vote on the Hugo. They vote on the Nebula.
The Hugo is awarded by the vote of members of the World Science Fiction Society and all you have to do to become a voting member is pay $40.
SFWA membership is hardly unattainable, but it's a good deal harder than that.
I didn't say there was anything wrong with the Golden Globes or the Hugo. But I was sure someone would take offense. They are both basically fan based popularity contests, not professional awards. The quality of the works it is awarded to varies pretty substantially. Some great pieces of work have received it. Some less than great pieces of work have received it.

I had to force my way through the book. I am realizing that science fiction is just not my particular cup of joe.

Ah, somehow I switched the Hugo and the Nebula in my mind. It wasn't really a flame, I didn't take offense I just wanted to know what you meant. I really don't pay much attention to awards so I had no clue how the golden globes (or apparently the Hugo) were decided. But seriously who thinks the monkey idea would be cool?

My mom has a complaint about yearly awards, particularly the Caldecott award for children's literature. She says that some years, maybe there aren't ANY books worthy of the award. Other years, several. But that's not how the contests are structured.
