I really liked this movie when I caught it on TV in college a decade ago. I had forgotten the ending, which, as OSC says, strips a lot of the happiness from the relationship Cage's character had built over the film with her. It reminds me of Matchstick Men, a film I don't know if I'll ever be able to rewatch, but which I nonetheless love, because of the same reason. Though Matchstick Men is a much, much more extreme version of this problem.
