Are you familiar with the Columbia University "mattress girl" story? This girl started carrying around a mattress as an "art project" about her rape. She had accused an individual named Paul Nungresser, a German national, of raping her. Turns out that this girl was pretty desperate for this dude's physical affection:
The univeristy's Rape tribunal, and the police, ended up dismissing the girl's claims. That's when she started carrying around a mattress as an "art project." This girl even had the junior senator from New York defending her publicly.
This girl offered base acts in the hope of getting a relationship. When Mr. Nungresser (being a young man) took advantage of what was offered to him, but didn't offer her a relationship, this girl ended up accusing him of rape.
Now Mr. Nungresser is suing Columbia University for harrasement.

I admire Orson Scott Card's fearlessness, though, admittedly, he was certainly wrong about that NeoCon stuff (remember when he suggested that the USA invade Syria and all sorts of other crazy things?) However, I believe that Mr. Card is essentially correct on cultural issues, and though he has been defeated on the issue of gay marriage, he can still stick it to his enemies by taking a stand against this modern "rape" hysteria.
Mr. Card, society awaits your cogent and incisive commentary!!!!!

Nah, bra, you drained that well dry like three iterations ago. You can even skip the 'Who's Clive? And link?' bits too, they're basically considered as read into the record whenever you pop back up.
Anyway, given how emphatically and how often Card has made his contempt for liberals known in the last five years, and since it doesn't actually cost him in safety or wealth to continue to elicit that antagonism, nah, on this issue he isn't brave at all.
That's not to say I believe the opposite-simply that when someone expresses an antagonistic opinion to people who already know he despises them, that's not an example of bravery. Where's the risk?

I disagree. He bares a lot of cost in social standing to keep objecting to the liberal triumph of homosexual marriage. The man has one one life, and he cannot keep fiercely fightging the same battle forever.

The purpose of Sampinary's obnoxious post is to derail the thread.
Social justice Warrior Facsists cannot abide repeated bad narrative outcomes. Nearly every public rape accusation from the past several years has been proven to be false -- from the Duke Lacross team case, to the "mattress girl" case, and to outrageously false UVA case publisized by Rolling Stone magainze.
Mr. Card, society and civilization await your column on this topic.

I almost started to respond with something reasonable that came from, like, five minutes of googling the issue. Then I decided to lay down with a cool cloth on my head rather than lay out any more troll kibble.
What happened to talking about our favorite cookies? There's a Sprouts Market near us, we don't tend to bother with it much, but their bakery's two-bite brownies and two-bite orange/cranberry scones are pretty much manna from heaven.

The Fresh Market near my house makes brownie crisps which are like brownie batter cookies. They combine the best of cookies and brownies and are the best thing in the world and am not supposed to eat them but I'm going to go get a box now.
Thanks a lot, Clive.

Kinda the same thing I guess
And yeah, why not just post the whole stinking book next time. I have still never read the whole thing so it would give me something to do.

Not only is it not a valuable service, based on my understanding of the way this codebase works, it runs a very real chance of killing the forum.

It might be an interesting and relevant commentary, but I would probably appreciate it a lot more if I actually read Atlas Shrugged. The Fountainhead was enough (though I will admit, Ayn Rand makes a pretty good point about the nature of heroes, though she is encouraging a very very pathological mentality).
I have to say, my RSI-friendly keyboard puts the "home", "end", "page up" and "page down" keys in reach of my right pinkie. It's the best thing that ever happened to web browsing.

It was indeed and despite the huge annoyance of it, I was also laughing hysterically over it this morning. Perhaps even funnier, I am in the middle of a re-read of Cryptonomicon and before I saw your post, I was considering posting one of the long rants from it in here but I figured that would probably be some kind of copyright violation.

That being said, it would be nice to talk about some of the real and actual problems men face in our society (whether that be child support, or (the relatively rare but still problematic) unfair way male domestic abuse or rape victims are treated, etc) without being conflated with or drowned out by misogynists. But like seriously, my experiences and the way I'm treated by society as a straight white man is so relatively awesome and easy - like literally almost everything is *designed* for my comfort and success - that it would feel outrageously disingenuous to talk about feeling "oppressed". Maybe in 30 or 40 years once the playing field has been leveled more then those conversations will come to the forefront.
(It's actually my belief that every one of them is actually an artifact of sexism anyway that will disappear soon after the related sexist belief disappears - i.e, once men and women make equal pay and have equal chances to advance their careers and we get rid of this idea of a woman being inherently weaker and dependent on a man's support, I think child support laws will follow suit. That's a discussion for another day, though)

Well if you're offering...
STEP ONE: THE RANDMARILLION
Once upon a time there was a person named Ayn Rand who was very convinced that her pseudophilosophy of Objectivism was the correct way of doing anything or looking at anything or being rational at all. So while the pseudophilosophy may have been filled with a fatal series of errors (like how its rules on causation contradict its rules on free will) she sidestepped this noisome little problem by writing books in which she essentially created fantasy worlds in which Objectivism was correct and always succeeded. The correctness of Objectivism and the evil of democracy and any sort of socialism was written into the code of her universe as firmly and fundamentally as, say, the metaphysic in the lord of the rings, where the creatures of eru ilúvatar are good and capable of growing and making things good and right, but melkor's creatures like ogres and trolls are fundamentally incapable of good or creation and will always be evil destroyers or whatever. Rand, instead of dragons and elves and crap, just worked on the slightly more fantastical premise that a form of absolutely unchecked capitalism that is precisely as unchecked as she desired it and in the specific way she desired it is the only real force for good in the world and is the only proper and rational expression of morality and individualism.
So in order to understand the world of Atlas Shrugged, you must understand that it is exactly this, with the imposed metaphysic of her novels — the magical fantasy rules that underpin it fundamentally in a way which will cause world events to occur in exactly a manner which will not just validate the triumph of her capitalism, but lionize it as the ultimate source of all that is good in this world.
It would be as if I had a pseudophilosophy named Samjectivism where I am supremely awesome, win all internet debates, am always fundamentally correct, and adopting my beliefs and attitudes are the only way to be rational and moral. While this is essentially correct (and I will be detailing this exhaustively in a series of works with names like "The virtues of Samishness") let's just pretend just for the moment as an obviously ridiculous thought experiment that this is actually just me being an obsessively deluded egotistical crank — while the real world may disprove Samjectivism pretty soundly and my philosophical works are torn to shreds for being shoddily produced, flawed hackwork, I can still write books in which Samjectivism is always right and true and will be vindicated by how things play out. Also, the good Samjectivists are always handsome and the people they have to compete against are always sweaty and gross and super, like, mega ugly, like for serious.
Which will bring us to part two ..

Yeah come on Sam, we need you to finish this series before you die. Brandon Sanderson is good and all but he just hasn't grasped the Samjectivists principals in quite the same way.

Ok! You have a world which is explicitly designed, right down to the metaphysic, to be fully and fundamentally about how and why Ayn Rand is totally right about, you know, everything. It is kind of like the novels I wrote when I was 13 where every girl wanted to have sex with me, it was true in that world because I wrote it, okay? I was totally the most sexualest hot man in middle school, in my story. Except now this is a novel written by a person in an adult body which some other people in adult bodies consider a valid basis for personal ethics or how world economies would work. Even the physical appearance and basal demeanor of the creatures in your fantasy novel have to express in a satisfactory way whether they stand on the side of good and white and delightsome (objectivist capitalists) or foul and dark and evil (socialist vermin)
To that end:
- Beauty Equals Goodness. The good guys and the bad guys are essentially different fantasy races. Their appearance is an important assessment of their character! Good races are beautiful, like elves! Bad races are ugly, like goblins!
- Your good guy races are the capitalist protagonists. The members of this fey race are all strikingly handsome, usually with a monotonously consistent description of their facial features as 'angular' and 'sharp,' along with tallness, prominent cheekbones, and uncharacteristic youthful vitality even moving into middle age (like elves!). Striking blue eyes and blonde hair are for entirely innocent reasons definitely a preference.
- Female examples of this race often come off as unremarkable mary sues for these nordic heros, but usually possess the same 'angular' planes and inflexible BUT NOW SENSUAL precision. Sometimes they're too full of themselves and 'unfeminine' because they don't yet recognize and/or have succumbed to an awakening of rands i mean their unconscious desires, which is to have a strikingly angular chiseled male protagonist around to rape them and take charge because Rand thinks that's pretty much the natural order of things for the right place of mens and womens, and Rand is always right!
- These chiseled, geometrically angular, tall, handsome, beautiful, best, best, most best, awesome, angular, tall, chiseled, determined, angular, best angular, and most best angular fey capitalists are differentiated from their nemesis, the sloppy and petulant socialist scum.
- These sloppy and petulant socialist scum are a benighted and twisted and misshapen race, forged to represent truly and visually their untrustworthiness and wickedness. They are possessed of such horrifically unrational and evil ideas as actually giving a shit about other human beings.
- Appropriately, this race of vermin are usually short, squat, floppy, disgusting, jowled, have small and petulant mouths (like I really like this idea, okay, it's always about the mouths themselves being specifically petulant. Socialists start with 'resting bitchface' and move on into 'resting bitchbodyandsoul' if you will pardon my language)
- Their skin is pale, clammy, and soft, and their eyes are the OPPOSITE of sharp. Eat it, statists! Yes, they have pale and creepy sunken sallow eyes and features, and gangling weird bodies.
- Sometimes these creepy gelatinous socialists are 'generally regarded' as beautiful but it comes as no surprises to true captains of industry that upon closer inspection, they are literal feces, because their eyes are also not sharp, but rather limp and empty. Or something.
So now that we have established our fantasy races and clearly separated the angular sharp eyed Objectivekin from the flappy soggy Statist Goblins. The battle lines for the future of the best country ever (america forever obvs) is SO ON.
Which will be Part Three ...
