I've been playing mafia at another forum for quite some time, and I figured that it would be something that people here would enjoy.
Generally, mafia games consist of two teams. The largest is the town, which is full of players who don't know one another's identity. The mafia is the smaller team, but they all know each others identity.
The game consists of turns in two alternating phases. During the day phase, the town tries to figure out who is mafia, and votes to kill one suspect. During the night, the mafia gets to make one kill (and other players might get actions depending on their roles).
The game ends when one side has eliminated the other (although in practice, this usually means mafia wins when they reach a majority in the town).
I'm looking for about 13 players for this game, and I'd strongly encourage people to give it a go.

Do you want to play a game of mafia here at hatrack, or are you wanting people to register at this other forum (which, just by the way, is the only way people can see your link)?
We used to have a merry old time with mafia around here, but it does tend to clutter up the forum and make things messy for everyone else. Maybe there's a neater way, I'm not sure.

I meant here. I was just posting the other thread since it was a good reference. Didn't realize that it wasn't viewable if you weren't logged in.

Really? Must have been before I joined up, since I don't seem to remember it.

I actually don't think I can play. I just wanted to be the first to suggest a Dr. Horrible theme. So someone else can be the thoroughbred of sin.

I was only making a Dr. Horrible related joke, sorry for the confusion but I do not intend to partake.

The problem wasn't forum clutter. Any given thread, no matter how long, takes the same amount of space on the forum's front page: eg the 2008Election and LastPost threads. Just to save time, copying&pasting my old postings from March 16, 2005

We've had several Jatraqueras leave for an extended period of time because of similar postings. When not permanently, at least until after the poster got booted off Hatrack. And even then, their participation hasn't been the same. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . No, it isn't okay. This type of playful behaviour has happened before. And the atmosphere created always eventually devolved until playful use ended up being used as an example/excuse for others to use similar wording in a nonplayful manner on more serious threads. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The moderators do not make a full-time job of reading postings here. Nor should they have to. We should be responsible enough to take care of ourselves.
And no, I don't file complaints notifying moderators.
However, you weren't here when devolution of the forum atmosphere leading to the previous incidents occurred. If you had been witness, you wouldn't have posted such words in the first place. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . An RPG Mafia / mystery-solving game -- in which "assassin"s kill "citizen"s and "citizen"s lynch suspected "assassin"s -- useta be a regular feature of this forum. Enough so that rarely a day passed in which a game wasn't on the front page. Because of those past incidents, they are no longer played on this forum.
Some old-time players should be better able to pinpoint the last game, but sometime before 27January04 various physical threats were used as angry rhetoric within serious threads. Thus there arose a general consensus (or more importantly, KatherineJanitor's opinion) that violence within Mafia games encouraged similar wording during heated exchanges. Hatrack's Mafia players on the main agreed, and chose to shift their games to spinoff forums such as GreNME, SakeRiver, and GalacticCactus. And a very broad ban against making threats (including those made in jest) of violence similar to the type that might actually occur in real life was instituted to prevent reoccurrences in the future.
Obviously, total absurdities such as calling for pitchforks&torches or tar&feathers aren't considered as meeting the "similar to the type that might actually occur in real life" standard.
As for playing Mafia now Many years have passed since the last person threatened physical violence in a serious thread, then was subsequently banned. And we have a new Janitor/moderator. Personally I'd ask for his opinion before starting a game.

Actually, neither do I. I think aspectre misremembers.
The move to other fora for mafia was a gradual shift, and I cannot recall ANY push from our then-Janitor or any other PTB for mafia not to be played here. Which is not to say that running it past Papa is not a good idea -- it is, of course.

I would wish to play, except I had to quit school because I was overcommitted time wise. So I am going to pass this time. Maybe after I finish this manuscript and after the ABO exam and stuff...

I still intend to get the game going. We still could really use a few more people, and since people seem to be of the opinion that this is something that ought to be run past PJ, I'm going to shoot him off a message before the game starts just to make sure.

GalacticCactus has an area dedicated entirely to Mafia and is hosted by a member of Hatrack, so I think that might be a better location.
