I'm a big fan of cartoonist Jay Stephens. His work ranges from completely zany, innocent, inventive comics done for all ages to some truly sick, twisted, darkly humorous work done for the alternative comics set. Or sometimes a merging of both extremes. (See his The Land of Nod Rockabye Book graphic novel for a truly unsettling, insane, entertaining sequential art experience. It's like an old school Hanna Barbera cartoon on crack!)

The Secret Saturdays I think is his first creation done as a pure action show. It's basically the earliest iteration of Jonny Quest merged with The Herculoids and given a cryptozoology focus.

Plus it has a David Warner-sound-alike as the lead villain, which is always fun. [Wink]

The lead character is this kid named Zak Saturday, who's the offspring of Doc Saturday (think a kinder, milder Doc Savage) and Drew (who has a magical flaming sword).

The cast also includes a goofy Fiskerton Phantom (A.K.A. the Sherwood Thing), a chameleon komodo dragon, and some sort of prehistoric winged thing. Together they fight the Crypt Keep...uhm..."V.V. Argost", a very fey and grotesque mastermind.

Jay has promised that future episodes will feature some of the more bizarre and exotic cryptids that allegedly exist around the world. The pilot pleased my inner 11 year old, so I'll check 'em out.
