Basically, that was my reaction to Speed Racer. It's an irony-free big budget recreation of the very silly, hyper-kinetic anime. Somehow they managed to get an incredibly talented cast playing a Saturday morning script. I -would- say whether or not one would enjoy it would depend on one's opinion of the original series...but, I can't. The visual style here is the deal-killer. It's undeniably unique and interesting. It's also like being smothered in Lucky Charms for two hours.
If you can tolerate that and loved the old show for what it was, go see it. Otherwise, go see Iron Man again.

Heheh. Somehow, I knew this was about Speed Racer before I got in here. I kind of enjoyed it, but then, I also enjoyed Megarace, which this totally reminded me of. Epilepsy sufferers beware. This movie will kill you.

I want to watch it, but I'm planning on sitting in the very back row, and I may bring sunglasses.

Local paper panned it, gave it one star. Says they fear for anyone going to see this in an IMAX theater.

It's been getting mostly dismal reviews, even from hardcore old school anime sites...-except- in cases where the reviewer is a purist fan of the original show, and loves this (shall we say) extremist literal-minded obsessive remake.
Which isn't everyone's cup of tea, to say the least. Add the color frenzy and I think many people will leave it wanting an aspirin.
Though...kids in the audience seemed to love Spritle and Chim-Chim. The two characters most adult fans despise. Hee-hee-hee.

That was one of my favorite episodes of Dexter's Lab. Anyway, I'm nearly had a seizure during this movie, but in a good way. The lines sounded like they came straight from a bad anime.
