I was 8 when the contest started, and, according to the Wikipedia article, I must have been 8 or 9 when it ended. The way it worked was, you sent in a postcard voting for either Quisp or Quake. I'm fairly sure I voted for Quisp, budding SF fan that I was.
Had they done it 15 years later, it would have been a 900 number, like they did with deciding if Robin should die. Ten years after that, it would have been e-mail, and if they did it today, it'd be text messaging. But I remember the postcards.
