I'm just starting to get excited about this game system dropping. It's only 17 days away. I watched South Park last night and had to laugh a little. I'm not nearly as excited about it as Cartman but it is starting to build in me.
I'm more curious to see how the battle between PS3 and the Wii goes. My prediction is that far more Wii's will be sold based simply on the price. I've always been a big Nintendo fan and really hope to see the Wii sky rocket.

My excitement level is growing too, and I don't even plan on getting one until sometime early next year. Maybe with my income tax return.
I don't think it will outsell the PS3 over time though, but it doesn't have to. Nintendo isn't trying to trump PS3, which is why they stayed away from the hardcore gaming and graphics. They are going for innovative, for creating NEW markets in people who might not play games now. They want to steal marketshare, not take everything over.
Dollar for dollar, PS3 is going to win, and unit for unit, PS3 will win too. But Sony is going to lose a ton of profits with this thing. The value of their company is already down 40% from 2001. And video game sales are driving their company, especially amidst the largest consumer recall in history, with their battery fiasco.
Sony REALLY needs this to work out, and I think it will. They'll sell all their units, but it had damn well better live up to expectations, or they'll have to slash the price of the unit. Problem is, the Blu-ray part that is keeping the price so high isn't going to see a price decrease for a couple years, which is going to inflate the price of the unit.
To say nothing of the fact that I think both HDDVD and Blu-Ray are headed for a flop in the next couple years. We're YEARS away, as a society, from having enough HD TVs in homes to justify people buying a player that plays HD quality movies in their homes. I understand Sony's drive to try and stick a Blu-Ray player in every home, but I really see it shooting them in the foot. I'd rather buy a cheaper Xbox 360, or better yet, the now super cheap Wii just for the fun, without needed a super fancy TV to be able to enjoy it.
PS3 isn't going to see a profit until the price point comes down, a lot, or until Blu-ray takes off/more HD ready tvs are in the homes. Good times for Nintendo and Microsoft, both are going to pick up some marketshare from this. Nintendo will survive into the 8th generation, and likely, Microsoft and Sony will look like copycats in the aftermath, if they don't get caught for patent rights violations in the process.

I'm pretty excited for the Wii, but since I recently got an HDTV, I'm almost inclined to get the 360. I'm absolutely stoked for Zelda though, and I'll probably end up getting the Wii just for that. Problem is, it sounds like many of the first generation titles are going to have the same problems the DS titles did - i.e., they don't live up to the potential of the system and they're generally subpar. But in the long run, it's too hard for me to pass up Zelda, Mario, Metroid, etc. So, I'll probably be there on launch day, trying to score a system, which I'm thinking won't be that difficult given how many systems they're putting out there on day one.

I think in a gaming system the blu-ray is a better idea just based on the amount of data storage it offers. The PS3 will benefit from that for years to come.

Have you ever seriously been turned off by how many disks a game was?
Seriously take any game you love.
If it was 1 blu-ray dvd or 4 dvd's (bear in mind most games never go beyond 1 dvd, so it wouldnt suprise me if 95% of PS3 games fit on 2 normal dvds) would you really reconsider your purchase?
When Final Fantasy VII came out for the PSX most people actually loved the fact there were THREE CD's because they could grasp just how much content they were getting.
Not saying blu-ray's bolstered storage capacity isn't better, it just doesn't warrant the extra 200-300 dollars thats all. Now if it had blu-ray burning capacities in the PS3 that would be a whole new beast

I read somewhere (awhile ago, so I may very well be misquoting), that when Microsoft was planning the 360, they asked developer's what sorts of improvements they'd like to see. One of the highest ranking answers was "more storage space". But then microsoft noticed that something like 80% of the games used less than 70% of the storage space and said "screw it, it's not that important"
In otherwords, the current amount of storage space really isn't getting used up anyway, so it's probably not important to have that much more.

The last time I owned a gaming system that wasn't some sort of Sony Playstation was about 1988. I was in their corner for a long time with this generation of consoles. But Sony's marketing and development practices have been so immensely annoying and arrogant that I have no intention of getting the PS3.
It's not really even the money, either. It's the stupidity, the greed, and the sense of entitlement that makes them think they can do whatever they want, on whatever timetable they want, and expect their little button-pushing drones to fall right in line.
Of course, I only bust out the video games a couple times a year, so doing without the next generation isn't going to cramp my style too much. But if I do break down and decide to get something, I think Sony has done a fine job of selling me on the Wii.
Maybe the next Metal Gear or Final Fantasy will change my mind (if they manage to hold on to the franchises), but I wouldn't count on it.

The PS3 really doesn't interest me all that much. If I had the spare cash, I would buy the 360 and the Wii. The 360 interests me because of Perfect Dark, and Halo 3 (when it comes out) and Wii because of Mario and Zelda.
Final fantasy is fun...but it doesn't really hook me enough that I want to buy the system for it.

Now, on the one hand, PS3 has two Final Fantasy XIII's coming, Resident Evil 5, Metal Gear Solid 4, Devil May Cry 4, and a number of other games that seem interesting. On the franchise side, these are the games I want to buy. Along with, of course, good looking original games for the system.
But I don't have $500 (or, God forbid, %600) and I won't for awhile.
Also, their marketing practices and the attitude the company's leadership seems to have about the system are beginning to piss me off, too.
For awhile there, every announcement Sony made seemed to make things worse.
"$600?!"
"Lame looking controller?!"
"No rumble feature?!!"
"the guy in charge called it a computer, saying it wasn't a video game system?!"
"He also shows deep contempt for us?!"
But anyway, as to the Wii:
I want one now. This is the first Nintendo system I've relaly been excited about since.. um.... since I was a kid.
First of all, compared to five or six hundred dollars, $250 seems VERY reasonable. The Wii will sell copies due to that alone!
The controller is the most innovative video game thing I've ever seen. I just hope it's used well.
Nintendo's strategy of innovation appeals to me. Granted, I don't really like a lot of their games, and am not interested in kids games as much, but even so, it looks to be awesome.
I'll be getting one first, no doubt.
Later I'll get a PS3. Because I want said games from above. But not yet. Oh not yet.

I'm not sure when, if ever, I will buy into this generation, but if I do it will probably be in the form of a 360. Honestly, a large portion of the decision is that I'm a huge Halo fan, and I really want to get Halo 3. Other than that, I might consider a Wii. The control scheme sounds like it could be interesting, and the new Zelda game looks good. It the system gets good reviews once it is actually out, I might consider buying it eventually.
On the other hand, I've never owned 2 systems by the same company, which is a streak I'd have to break if I bought one this generation. Maybe I'll just sit things out. In addition, a new computer is a somewhat higher priority than a game console, although the costs are a bit prohibitive at the moment even if I build it myself (which I'll probably end up doing).
Anyways, I guess that's just a long way of saying that I have no idea what I'm going to do as far as gaming goes, although a PS3 is very unlikely to be part of the picture.

No way is the PS3 going to win -- at least not at first, and I doubt they will at all. Nintendo's going to be far and away the lead console, and though the 360 won't sell at all in Japan, it's doing fine in North America and Europe. (The PS3 won't even ship to Europe for another six months or so, iirc.)
The only edge the PS3 has is its Bluray function, and even that's no clear winner yet. Sony's strategy seems to be marketing this as a cheap HD player rather than a game console -- which probably explains why they've done all they can to alienate gamers. They still might win with that strategy, but... I hope not. Microsoft's done a great job with their 360 division, and I want them to finally get some returns on their work. I agree with you that HD's going to be a flop, at least for another 5-10 years, particularly with the whole HDMI problem and probable ten other standards blowups that are bound to happen.
The 360's a more impressive piece of technology than I expected. Apparently the AI for Assassin's Creed will actually be superior on the 360 than it will be on the PS3, and Halo 3 looks amazing. (Which Microsoft's going to start selling when the PS3 launches, heh.) Had I the money and the space, I might actually go the Wii60 route. As it is, the only console I'm even vaguely considering is the Wii, and that's only if I can find some kind of adaptor to plug it in to my computer monitor.
...or when Lucasarts releases that Wii Jedi game they were talking about.

Sony will sell as many as they can at the launch price, then they will have no choice but to lower the price in order to compete. They'll still do more volume by the time this generation of consoles is over than the Wii will.
I think they will struggle at first, but people are waiting for two things: Customer reviews, and a drop in the price.
Nintendo has lost a huge huge piece of the gaming pie over the last two generations, and I think it's going to make up some ground with this one, but it'll still be in third place. Don't get me wrong, I think Sony is going drop billions from what it made off the PS2, but I still think they will beat the Wii by the time the next gen systems come out.

The Japanese price of the base PS3 has already been lowered, even before its release.
I think the real question is whether Nintendo will be as successful in courting non-gamers with the Wii as they have been with the DS.

Why is the PS3 so expensive in Mexico? It's like $800 American. You'd think they'd lower the price for a place that obviously can't afford it, but they jacked it up.

Just remember, Sony (and Microsoft) have to keep the prices high for a while, in order to recoup costs. The number of units required is fixed, unless they want to take even longer (or lower) total profit. Nintendo actually has the luxury of a bit more elasticity of price, since they make profit out of the gate.

Sony is going to do REALLY bad for a while. They don't have nearly enough consoles to go around. Meanwhile the Wii will have plenty for everyone.
I think this will help out Microsoft. Sony is going to take a huge hit, and Microsoft and Nintendo will sell more.
I was planning on getting a Wii at launch, but it's more money than I had expected. I will probably get it early 2007.

im excited for the Wii. with so much 3rd party support, 29 launch titles, and 30+ for the virtual console, low price, well its hard not to want to get one. Zelda TP, Mario Galaxies, and Super Smash Bros BRawl are all system sellers IMO (especially smash bros).
im not sure how it will compare with the 360 and ps3 a couple years from now, but it will definently do better than the gamecube did. it will help sell 360's as well i think because they are the two cheapest consoles and the 360 is finally getting some decent games. Gears of War will be a system seller as well. while the ps3 looks to be the best system all-round, i dont think sony will have the same hold on the video game industry like it did the with the ps2.
EDIT: every year my sis sends me a list of places that i can pick from for a gift certificate for xmas. she was suprised to have me reply this year with Toys R Us. but now i will be able to get Wii for only $150.

Nintendo has a LITTLE bit of price to recoup too. Granted they aren't trying to make up for however much Sony spent researching the Blu-ray tech, or how to put it in the PS3, and whatever work Microsoft had to do for whatever makes the XBOX cool, but Nintendo had to develop the tech that goes with their motion sensitivity stuff, for which I believe they purchased the entire company that developed it (good for stifling Sony and Microsoft from following suit too quickly).
Regardless though, I agree that they have a huge advantage in price, not just because Microsoft and Sony depend on volume for their profit, whereas by now, Nintendo is used to having a smaller share of the market, and get their profits from less volume. I think they stand to be big winners with this generation of consoles.

Nintendo has a modest amount of R&D to recoup, but they're selling the Wii at a profit. Sony and Microsoft are selling their consoles at a loss and hoping to make up the difference in game and accessory sales.
Of course, the reason that Nintendo only has a modest amount of R&D to recoup is that the Wii appears to use essentially the same architecture as the GameCube, just with a somewhat faster processor (same processor line, though) and with, at a minimum, some GPU tweaks for the new lighting effects and so forth that we've seen in screenshots (the full extent of the changes to the GPU aren't known at this point). Sony and Microsoft both went to IBM and paid them to design entirely new CPUs (Xenon for MS and Cell for Sony), as well as entirely new GPUs (ATi for MS and nVidia for Sony, though the GPUs in the GameCube and Wii were also designed by ATi).
It's interesting that the cheapest console this generation is also the only one being sold at a profit.

It remains to be seen if Nintendo and 3rd party developers can come up with plenty of unique games that take advantage of the Wii. If they can keep churning out fun games that are inventive I can see Nintendo in 4-5 years being poised to deliver their next console with solid graphic improvements AND innovative peripherals for new types of games. I honestly can see Nintendo on track for dominating the market all over again.
Something tells me Sony won't let Wii win just by having a cool new peripheral. They will duplicate it as fast as possible, and if Nintendo does not grab this baton and run, they may never have the chance again.

Somehow I doubt that Sony and Microsoft will be able to fully incorporate the level of motion sensitivity into their games that Wii is going to, while also keeping the graphics at the state they are.
Then again, I haven't heard anyone say that Wii specifically sacrificed graphics for gameplay, so, maybe not, but judging from the half hearted attempt by Sony to add motion sensitivity to their gaming, it doesn't bode well for them. They need to be prepared, like Nintendo, to totally change the way a game is played. They might not see the need to, if they still pull in a profit and outsell Nintendo this generation.

Seeing as how Sony decided to also do a motion sensing controller, this doesn't seem all that likely. If the wii controller proves to be a big hit, I doubt that they can prevent Microsoft and Sony from jumping on the bandwagon.

I was sore all over and determined not to move from the couch when we got home, but darn it, my bowling arm just isn't the same sitting down. So during all of bowling, golf, and boxing (boxing was hilarious and exhausting), we ended up standing up every time it was our turn to play.
I can't wait to bring this sucker with us to Thanksgiving tomorrow, the whole family is going to have such a blast with it. Wiii!

The Playstation 3 has great games coming, but not a heckuva lot showing promise now. I think that that, combined with the highest price tag in its market, may bite them more than they expect. Add into that the competing market for HD DVD standards, I wouldn't place any bets on the future just yet.
Don't get me wrong, I suspect Sony will do just fine. But as a recent business column I read noted, Sony's been making a remarkable number of mis-steps lately.

So I hear that in Zelda, you just shake your remotes to swing the sword or block with your shield. Is this true? I was hoping that you would actually have to swing your remote like a sword, and hold your nunchuck up like a shield.

Controls in Zelda aren't 1-to-1. If you swing to one side, Link won't swing to that side, he'll just perform one of his regular sword swings. A lot of fanboys were complaining that it wasn't 1-to-1 initially, but most of the reviewers say it's still awesome and alot better than the GameCube version.

I think it's better. To use the sword you don't have to swing your remote, a wrist flick is all that's needed. I haven't gotten a shield yet, so I can't say anything about that. It's really fun so far.

I've read the PS3 is having a LOT of glitch problems, and they're being returned en masse to a lot of stores.
Don't have anything to substantiate that though, it was on the news earlier tonight. My cousin bought a Wii, and my Grandpa, who is 85, and hasn't ever played a game in his life had a blast playing the golf game with it.

My mom's the same way, Lyrhawn, only she's 46, not 85. She's never had even a passing interest in games, but she saw my friend and me playing it last night, and she said she'd like to try it out because it looked like a lot of fun.
When I got mine, all the guys in line were really friendly. I was pretty surprised, truth be told; I showed up at 10:30 Saturday night at Wal-Mart, and they only had 2 or 3 more people in line than the number of systems they had. I went over to our Circuit City, and that line was nearly full, even though they weren't holding a midnight launch. Oddly enough, though, it seems no one thought to go to Toys R Us. Since I didn't want to wait in line at Circuit City, I drove past the Toys R Us store in our city, and no one was in line. I showed up there at 7:30 in the morning (they were due to open at 10), and I was fourth in line, and they had eight consoles available. I got literally everything I was looking to get (and an hour early, no less! The manager was nice and allowed us to come in out of the cold to purchase our Wiis).
The interesting thing was that he told us one of the reasons Sony had told them that the PS3 was in short supply. Apparently out of each batch of the diodes they make for the Blu Ray readers, only so many of them are any good, which is why I am not at all surprised to hear that the PS3 is having a lot of glitches here at launch. Since Sony's trying to get these things to market as quickly as possible to make up for the slim pickings at launch, I'd bet that the problems are going to continue for some time to come.

So far, the only major complaints about the Wii are the ways Nintendo messed up their online implementation, to the point that (rarely) you can fry the firmware on your Wii, making it useless. Only a few reports so far, it doesn't seem as widespread as the 360 meltdowns, yet.
