or at least, the more proficient than I.

For a while now, whenever I start up my computer or open up an MS office program, a little window pops up titled "Windows Installer" and says something about configuring MS office. The program won't open until I hit the "cancel" button, but other than that, it works normally. It doesn't seem harmful to my computer, but it is rather annoying. Any help would be appreciated.

Some info:

A) I'm running Windows XP pro and Office XP pro with Frontpage.

B) I think it started happening when I tried to install the Japanese language plugin. It never seemed to work right, and I uninstalled it, but the problem persists.

If you still have your Office CD, drop it back it and see if installs whatever bit it is looking for....

Kinda need more info than this. You remind me of most of the callers I get every day: "there was some pop-up error, I don't know what it said." [Roll Eyes]

A short bout of surfing turned up a bug in Windows Installer.

The easiest fix would be to reinstall office and not choose the "This feature will be installed when required" options on any of the applications. That should fix it.

Primal's got the answer. Just do a complete install and you'll never ever ever have to worry about that curses window popping up again.

Thanks, I'll try that, Primal. Now I just need to find the software...

Sorry. It didn't say much more than that, although I did leave out the part where it asked me to insert the Office CD.

This can also happen if your user profile got hosed, although I run into it more with Roaming Profiles than home installations. If you've re-installed Office with the complete feature set and you're still getting this, you can create a new user account and see if the problem persists.
