A little while ago somebody here (I think) used the phrase "basset hounds got long ears" as an example of a non sequitur post. So I typed that phrase into Google and got several pages of results, while "basset hounds have long ears" turned up no results. How did "basset hounds got long ears" become a running joke?

It was used as a punchline in a Bloom County strip many years ago. At the time, the strip was at its height of popularity.

I was the one who used that here. I must obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul. Besides that particular comic fitting so well, it was part of a thing I did with a now defunct Hatracker of beloved memory.
If you don't know it, you need to go out and buy yourself some Bloom County books. I think at least a quarter of what I know about the funny comes from reading Bloom County, Calvin and Hobbes, and The Far Side.
