I'll write a little bit, and then post a question. Answer the question however you feel and add bit of your own (maximum of 4 lines), then ask your own question for someone else to answer. Hopefully, this will evolve into something of a story.
Start with:
There is an inhabited planet, little bigger than earth, with water and two land masses. The two land masses are on polar opposites of the planet. There are also some islands in between the the continents, but nothing terribly large. In between the two continents, there are oceans full of giant sea monsters, which attack passenger ships if they are detected and unprotected.
Do the two continents have a way of communication?

The sea monsters are actually machines built by another culture, which lives in the sea. They are quietly manipulating the life of the land dwellers. But one of the machines goes terribly wrong and begins to attack members of its own community.
Q: Why do the sea dwellers control the lives of the land dwellers?

The sea dwellers manipulate the lives of the land dwellers so that they will get they will recieve the offerings the land dwellers make to the sea creatures.
Why do the sea dwellers need these offerings?

The offerings are needed by the sea dwellers to power the sea monsters. The offerings are often a rare red diamond. But the land dwellers are running out.
Q: Why are the land dwellers running out of red diamonds?

The red diamonds are very difficult to get. They are mined from caves inhabited by killer rodents and there have been so many deaths that many of the land dwellers are unwilling to try.
What would happen if the land dwellers stopped the offerings all together?
