NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! Our chief weapon is suprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency.... Our *three* weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope.... Our *four*...no... *Amongst* our weapons.... Amongst our weaponry...are such elements as fear, surprise.... I'll come in again.
Edit: I think is the best 3k post I could possibly have.

What a waste of time. Shouldn't they be out there solving crimes and patrolling the streets for actual offenders rather than making empty shows of force?
US Troops patrolling in Iraq aren't scaring anyone, do they really think a couple of cops are going to do the trick?

Someone's looking to get reelected. Honestly I wish we could be more concerned about effective means of increasing our security instead of just visible ones. I guess it’s just one of the drawbacks of a democracy. Especially one with so many utterly hopeless people...

All that tactic would do is make me afraid that I had suddenly stumbled into a bad neighborhood, and was in the middle of a crime scene without knowing it.

Why don't I see some public action against stupid crap like this?
Why do people think that creating more terrorism will fix the old terrorism? State endorsed terrorism isn't any better than non-State endorsed.

As opposed to the others, which are governed by a bunch of perfect saints.

Sounds to me like a Police Graft plan. "Psst, buddy. I have 200 cops who will close down your business for 4 hours while we give out anti-terrorism leaflets, and basically scare away all your customers for the day, or you can donate to the Policeman's Benevolent Society. Do you really want your clients thinking you got terrorists hangin around the joint?"

That's a REALLY good point, Dan. Not that I'm saying the Miami police would ever do somethinig unscrupulous (really!), but that it has to be something that is going to make the business involved with the 'protection' really uncomfortable. At the very least it will disrupt business while it's going on.

OMG! I saw the exact same thing in a movie from the 80's! It was based in the People's Republic of Poland and there was a serial killer on the loose so a Russian general organized the militia and was doing the exact same thing at every bus and train terminal, trying to flush him out.
The only difference though is that they DID check identification papers and were told to be very fussy and loud and without subtlety about it.
