If I wear a cashmere coat to walk to synagogue in the rain (and carry an umbrella that keeps me semi-dry), will the cashmere get ruined?

Is it dryclean-only? Does it claim to be water-resistant?

Cashmere sweaters can be washed in water. I know it doesn't harm the fiber itself, but it might not be good for the coat for other reasons.

Cashmere sheds water beautifully. While I would still check the tag, I'd feel pretty safe about doing it. You've got to figure a coat they expect you to get a little wet.

You should be fine. I have a vintage cashmere coat that belonged to my aunt, and it's been rained on dozens of times. Boiling oil, now, that would be a problem.
