Canadian troops made it to rescue survivors in N.O 5 days before American troops made it there. This is a radio except from one of those FEMA streaming scanner stations.
"Hey, this is [identification number] down from Vancouver. We were told to contact you on this freaquency...?" FEMA: "Stand by" "Er, no. We're going in. No one's told us where to go, though." FEMA: "Stand by" "Negitive. We're going in." No further communications.

Well, now that THAT has been decided...and so definitively too...
Hate to break it to you, kid, but there were plenty of people, American and other nationalities,in both offical and unofficial capacities, that WERE there for the whole damn thing, from before the storm hit to right now....
Although how you feel it is OK to take credit for these peoples action merely because they are from the same country confuses me...
What exactally did you have to do with it again? I must have missed that part...
Were YOU there, or a dispatcher, or an EMT on site, or a relief worker?

I trace my family roots back almost four hundred years to the Loire valley in France. We were in France far longer than in Canada before we then came to America. Thus, French Canadian (or, French Canadian American? whatever). It's not about the fact that they were in Quebec, it's because of where they were before then that I call myself of French Canadian ancestry.
Scale it back a bit there sparky.

That's not New Orleans, dude. It's St. Bernard Parish. Not that I'm diminishing the Canadian troops, you know, just pointing out that people might not believe your post quite so much when you say Canadian troops got to New Orleans before Americans did, which is demonstrably untrue.

Kwea, although Blayne's claim is somewhat largely unfounded I think this is unfair. He never said "we" or included himself, only that he was proud of the Canadian troops and hats off to them, nothing more than any other person in any other country would say if he or she believed her troops had done something well.

Oh man, Kwea, listen to yourself. I agree Blayne may not make me stand up with pride for my fellow Canadians, but "hats off to our troops" is taking their credit? How many times have you said something similar about American troops in Iraq? (I don't know that these Canadians are actually in the army, but never mind).

His attitude was an in your face type of thing, which pissed me off. It's not that we (and yes I said we, I was in the Army for 3 years, and served as an EMT) don't appreciate all the help given by other countries...it is the whole "we are better than you are, even though it isn't supported my the acts" attitude that I have a problem with.
This also isn't the first thread where he has acted like this, either.
I am grateful for any and all help given by any other country, to be sure...but there are a lot of better ways of phrasing it than the way he did.
As someone who has helped in these types of situations in the past I know the magnititude of this disaster...or at least I have a basic idea of it. We can use all the help we can get, to be sure.

Heh, I knew the thrust of your argument was that Blayne was a tool, I was pointing out that you'd put your cranky pants on this morning.

You do have plenty of reason to be proud of them, though...they are helping many, many people, most of whom have lost everything but their lives.

Kwea...seriously, you need to settle down a bit. We all appreciate your insight given your background, however it doesn't negate anyone else's equally important insight. Personally, as someone who worked for five years on a FEMA disaster response project, I know the kinds of red tape and bureacracy that the response teams are facing at every level. And regardless of who was in NO first, FEMA and the U.S. government have failed to adequately respond to the rapidly escalating needs of the victims.

I completely agree with you on that...keep in mind that I worked for USAMRIID, and one of my rooomates was on the rapid deployment bio team.
It wasn't jsut this post that got to me, though, ti was a pattern of posts that he has written, this being only the most recent.
I don't think Blayne is a tool, really, he is just young. He should be proud of the fact that his country is helping, but that doesn't mean he should be slamming every other country, particularily since the very article he linked to refuted his claims.
My point is that there were people there from the get go, regardless of what he thinks.....not enough people, to be sure, but some people were there as soon as the storm passed, trying to help.
It is a disaster relief efort, not a damn footrace, and I dislike him treating this like it is a "we are better than you are" thing.
It was about time someone called him on it again, that's all.
