I took this shot this evening and was all fired up because I thought it was a really good shot. It wasn't until I viewed it on the computer that I noticed some pretty severe purple fringing along the back of the squirrel on the left. I fired up the Gimp and went to work with the cloning tool and ended up with this pic. I'm quite pleased with my efforts to clean this shot up a bit. I'm looking for a title for this shot. What do you all think? How about: TGIF?

No, it's a Canon A80. I've had a couple of shots in the last year or so that had some noticeable fringing but this was by far the worst example I've had. I was using a telephoto lens, perhaps that exacerbates the fringing. At any rate I thought the manipulated image turned out quite well.

I also have squirrel pics. I'll have to dig 'em up... Mine have raggedy tails, though, and could be rabid...

Those are great! I just love squirrels, my dog has an amazing resemblance to one (long-haired chihuahua).

I was hoping I'd get some feedback on the title as well as some discussion of the clean-up. Surely you folks have some great ideas for a caption or two? While I'm fairly happy with the shot itself, I'm more pleased with modified image and my ability to effectively use an image manipulation program.

The cleanup is very nice. Image size is getting a little too large (it's starting to pixilate). But the cleanup seems to have worked really well. I especially like how you reduced the sun glare from behind the left-hand squirrel. It looks a lot better and the manipulation isn't very noticeable.
As for captions:
"I think it's your turn to chase the kids."
"I told you we shouldn't Crazy-Glue our butts together, but do you listen? NO!"
"Is that your tail or mine?"
"You know, I really love this tree. I mean, sure, we're squirrels and we're sort of known for loving trees, but gosh darnit, this is one great tree. Here, just hug it a little. You'll see. Right? Great tree, huh?"

punwit, did you fix the right ear (the one on the left in the photo, but the right side of it's head) of the squirrel on the right? It's weird, but when I look at the pic in normal resolution, it looks worse in the retouched version. If I go to high resolution (zoom in) then it looks better in the retouched one.
I can't decide if that's an artifact of my pic viewer or if you actually did something there.
It took me about 50 times back & forth to determine that you didn't do anything to it's right eye. Weird.

Bob, I was surprised when you mentioned the pixelation issue because these pics were taken at the highest resolution of a 4 megapixel camera. I couldn't figure out why at first but then I had a chat with Farmgirl and she also mentioned the pixel issue. It suddenly dawned on me what had happened. The site I use to host images, http://www.imageshack.us/ won't accept images in the .jpe format and apparently somewhere in the process of modifying and scaling those images the format was changed to .jpe instead of .jpg. I spent about 1/2 hour last night trying to upload those images or find a way to convert them to .jpg. I finally settled on displaying the images on my computer and doing a screencapture. That was where the dpi was reduced. I then uploaded the resulting .png's to the host site. Farmgirl has offered to host the unadulterated images and I may take her up on that offer and post them later.
In regards to your question, "... did you fix the right ear...", no, I only touched up the purple fringing along the upper back and part of the ear on the squirrel on the left.
Edit to add my appreciation for the captions. The superglue and the tree hugging are my favorites.
