Just a letter to the editor about the President's order to fly the flag at half-staff as a sign of respect for Pope John Paul II. It's the second one on this page:

I can't tell if you're being funny or the link is messed up, Kat.
Here's the letter:
quote: In his April 8 letter, Richard H. Moore asked, "Since when do we subordinate the United States to any monarch, pope or other religious leader, or foreign state?"
In Section 7(m) of the Flag Code, Congress has authorized the president to order the flag flown at half staff in the event of the death of foreign dignitaries. This is not the first time this has been done: U.S. presidents ordered flags to be flown at half staff as a sign of respect for Yitzhak Rabin, Anwar Sadat and Winston Churchill.
As Mr. Moore stated, the Vatican is a sovereign state. The pope is the head of that state. President Bush was exercising authority granted to him by Congress and exercised by other presidents before him.

And if you're just having some fun with me, forgive me. I'm all Eveless and sad tonight.
quote:Why sad? You're in the paper! Sounding very intelligent, I might add.
Because I got all spoiled seeing my wife every day and now she's gone for a week. And I saw a tiny puppy she would have loved and didn't get to hear her use the cute puppy voice.

And I'm just feeling sorry for myself about Eve being gone. We've had to be separated for far longer before. Maybe I'll actually get work done on my paper this week, so we can go do something fun over the weekend.

Congrats, Dag. The Post, like any newspaper, prints only a small percentage of the letters they receive. With a paper the size of the Post, this is no small accomplishment.
I track these things - congratulations on packing accurate and relevant information into a concise package.
Not that any of us are surprised at your ability to do that, but I'll bet it was a breath of fresh air for the poor souls who have to sift through letter submissions at the Post.

They called within half an hour after I hit "send" to verify the letter. It's not like it's a huge issue, but there's so much misinformation flying around about this.
The only thing they really changed was removing the serial comma in the list of foreign dignitaries. It chafes my lawyer soul, but if you drop enough commas you can get a whole column inch over the course of a Sunday paper.
