Dunno if anyone here has seen this, but Fiona Apple has a new album out.
Sort of.
Seems she completed an album called "Extraordinary Machine" two years ago, but it wasn't released by Sony for whatever reason. Likely because it wasn't commercial enough or didn't have a breakaway pop hit or whatever. Two of the songs were leaked on the Internet last year and have been widely spread around by Fiona fans. SFGate.com columnist Mark Morford wrote about it today.
Now a DJ in Seattle has the whole thing -- dunno how -- and has been playing it over and over, to appreciative listeners who have begun calling other radio stations to demand it. And, of course, all the mp3s are now available to anyone with some Google time.
Something I thought was interesting: it popped up at www.rateyourmusic.com, which means you can now rate an album that's never officially existed.
So the question now is, will Sony respond to the proven fan interest and release the album, or will they just clam up and sue everybody?

I was just wishing she'd release another album earlier this afternoon. I'll have to see if I can get my hands on any the new songs.

Oh, and in answer it your question, I expect that they'll clam up and sue, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

I like her. I always have. Heck, I'd go out with her if she put on ten pounds. Her beats are innovative, and I appreciate her musical sense. Both albums are worthy, and I'm sure that she has even better material after six years of growing.

I've been anticipating getting my hands on this album for some time now.
But, while it is neat, this is not the first unreleased album available for ratings.
People had been rating and reviewing the Beach Boys Smile (in various bootleg and playlists form) long before Brian Wilson rerecorded it last year.

Yeah, I heard one of her songs on that station. I think it was 107.7 the end. Wasn't bad. I think it's cool they've been playing it though, probably somewhat risky.

I downloaded it, and it's pretty good on first listen. I imagine it will grow on me quickly. It's just nice to hear new material from someone who's music you enjoy, and who hasn't released anything for such a long time.
As for the illegal download, I have no qualms about it, as I intend to buy the album if and when it's officially released.
