quote: Man sings: There once was a man Who loved a woman She was the one he slew the dragon for They say that nobody ever loved as much as he But me! I love you more
There once was a man Who loved a woman She was the one he gave his kingdom for They say that nobody ever loved as much as he But me! I love you more
My love is a giant Fierce and defiant But how can I prove it to you? Ain’t got no kingdom, no dragon To back up my braggin’ How can I show what I would do?
I only know There once was a man Who loved a woman She was the one he ate that apple for They say that nobody ever loved as much as he But me! I love you more
Woman sings: There once was a woman Who loved a man He was the one that she took poison for They say that nobody ever loved as much as she But me! I love you more
There once was a woman Who loved a man He was the one she swam the channel for They say that nobody ever loved as much as she But me! I love you more
My love’s meteoric It’s merely historic A whirlwind, a cyclone on wheels. It rocks the whole solar plexus It’s bigger than Texas I just can’t tell you how it feels
I only know There once was a woman Who loved a man Loved him enough to cause the Trojan War They say that nobody ever loved as much as she But me! I love you more
More, more more…
(singers trade lines)
M: More than a hangman loves his rope W: More than a dope fiend loves his dope M: More than an injun loves his scalps W: More than a yodeler loves his alps
M: More W: More M: More W: More
M: There once was a man W: There once was a woman M: Who loved a woman W: Who loved a man M: She was the one he slew the dragon for W: He was the one that she took poison for
Both: They say that nobody ever loved as much as (s)he But me! I love you more
I'm not completely sure about that "whirlwind" line in the woman's part. Anyone???

Note: I just talked to dkw on the phone. Bob was, in fact, singing this out loud in the background.

I thought that I was the only grown up who liked the Pajama Game. I think it's a lovely piece, about dignity, love, and seven and a half cents. I've seen three high schools do it, and all them have given me a delightful evening. I've seen the Doris Day movie, and I think I liked high school performances more. Don't forget Hernando's Hideaway!
For high school musicals, I like Guys and Dolls. Watching kids do that play is a rare joy.
Edit:
Is there anyone who recognizes of the couples that are alluded to in the song.
I only recognize Romeo and Julliet, Adam and Eve, and Paris and Helen.

Oh, the poison is about Romeo and Juliet! I'm such a doofus. All I could think of was Peter Pan and Tinkerbell, when she drank his poisoned medicine so that he wouldn't die. Silly me.

the "gave his kingdom for" is probably about King Edward and "Mrs. Simpson" He abdicated rather than give up the love of his life (who was a commoner, and I guess she'd been divorced or widowed).
Anyway, that's the only other one I know. I think the slew the dragon is just a reference to generic knights in shining armor tales.
I don't know what woman swam the channel to impress a man. I do know that when people used to swim the channel, they'd cover themselves in bear fat first, so I'm thinking she probably impressed him in more ways than one. Whoever she was.

I'm thinking the "swam the Channel" reference was to a movie that came out 4 years earlier, Dangerous When Wet.
