Russka, by Edward Rutherford, is a thick book. It is also a great read.
It takes Russia's history from the first century AD to the fall of the Iron Curtain and tells the life story of a person from each era. Half history book, half novel, it's incredible. Rutherford has a masterly literary voice and his historical prose is easy to understand and process.

Russka was my least favorite of the books he's written. Sarum was great, London was pretty good, and I'm currently reading the Forest. I need to find my copy of Russka so I can give it another go. But the books are highly entertaining and LONG, so they last awhile.
