Okay, we have here, "Member" and "New Member" which only lasts a couple of posts.
I was invited to another forum by someone, a theology discussion forum, and in reading their FAQ's I came across this:
Everyone has a title within the forum. You will notice them below the Username in each post. Some titles are automatically assigned based on the number of posts a user has made, and some titles are assigned by the forum owner to denote official representatives of the company or other VIPs in the forums.

If Hatrack had this system what would you be? I'd be Born Here but fast on my way to becoming an Alien Lifeform.

This is why I don't quite like forum titles. While it can seem fun in the beginning we'd probably see too many posts that are aimed just at getting at a certain level...
That and you'd get things like OSC being an Enthusiast...

<Inserts two cents> It makes me wonder, though, if there should be something added into the equation to take into account Lurkers? Because I have been around for awhile, I just don't always have a lot to say. So while I can be classified as an addict, some might not think their title is fair just because they are "quiet."

edited to add signature, I thought my post looked naked without it.

I kinda like the lack of differentiation here. It was almost nicer when you couldn't see how many posts each user had at the end of every comment.
It feels a bit more like a level playing field.
With a ranking system based on posts, I bet you'd see a lot more posts in the Last Post Threads, etc. as people tried to go for that next level up.

Actually, one thing I've always liked about Hatrack is that nobody seems too concerned about postcount. Sure, there are the landmark threads, but other than that, nobody cares. Nobody spams to raise their postcount (well, almost nobody ), and nobody ever uses postcount to pull rank on anyone. Having been on message boards where that sort of thing was commonplace, I would very strongly oppose any motion to get a postcount-related ranking system here.

very true...it can get tiresome in some places where post count seems to be the be all end all of who is who on the board. Over at Goodkind's board we had to do away with them since people used to always make posts bragging about their post count, or create post after post in order to get a higher count. When we were smaller, I used to just reset people's count to 0 when they pulled annoying stuff...but it just got to where it was just to annoying to deal with.

On the original Pweb, OSC was a Launchie (what they call a newbie over there).
He only posted once, I think.
