I've been using Winamp for...ever. I still use Winamp 2.xx. It plays my mp3s well, and that's all I need it for.
I'm wondering if I'm missing out by using this antiquated player. Is there any reason I should switch to something else for my music?

More modern players allow you to rate music by preference and categorize it by custom styles. This is very useful if you're in the mood for something goofy and decide you want to hear only songs you've given at least 4 out of 5 stars and have decided to call "goofy." Or if you're in the mood for some lovin' and don't want to have to individually queue up each song that puts you in the mood....

I find iTunes to be very disappointing sonically. Music Match sounds ok, but I still like even the old winamps better. Sonic Foundry's Siren is still my favorite but you can only get the trial version these days and it's pretty limited. Cakewalk has one called Pyro, but I know next to nothing about it.

Different players have different quality? I know they each have their own equalizers, but otherwise, isn't it just reading a file and playing it back?

I personally use both WinAmp and Windows Media Player, toggling between the two depending on my mood.

they each have their own decoding alogrithms, though it's fairly standard. The equalizers, additional effects, and other items probably have a lot to do with the sound quality as well... but iTunes is noticably weaker playing back the same file than almost any other player I own. Nero express was pretty poor, too.

The more recent Winamp is alright but it seems to take way longer to load than the old 2.91 version.
I have been using the Core Media Player (You can get it here). It is good for playing music as well as movies. It doesn't have DVD playback in the free version. It seems a little faster than Winamp to load but it is still slower than the old Winamp.
I haven't listened to much using iTunes but I have heard in several places that the mp3 playback isn't very good compared to aac.

I like the organizational format of Windows Media Player, and the instant reveiws are nice, too. The advanced visualizations are very elaborate and artistic.
quote: With windows media player, you can play songs at 2x normal speed! or 1/2 speed.
Which is especially for torturing certain Bunn V's with "The Reason."

That's stunning. Music players use software decoders instead of the driver-based, hardware-based, ultra-fast decoders that are crammed into the silicon wafers of my Sound Blaster?!?!
I. Am. Nonplussed.
