I posted this in my livejournal, but I didn't get nearly the non-Canadian volume of response that I was hoping for. So I decided to turn to Hatrack for some input.
I'm conducting a purely personal survey. I have listed a number of people/things, and I need you to tell me if you recognize them. And please tell me where you're from.
1. Great Big Sea 2. Red Green 3. Finger 11 4. Paul Gross 5. Mr Dressup 6. Avril Lavingne 7. Rick Mercer 8. Tim Horton's 9. Degrassi 10. The Guess Who 11. African Lion Safari 12. Barenaked Ladies 13. Inukshuk 14. Kraft Dinner 15. Due South 16. Smarties (the chocolate kind) 17. Robert Munsch 18. Canadian Tire 19. Jim Carrey 20. Guy Gavriel Kay 21. Harvey's 22. Gordon Lightfoot 23. Sarah McLaughlan 24. Poutine 25. Nickleback 26. Bryan Adams 27. Wonderland 28. Gordon Korman 29. (pre-sweetened) Iced Tea 30. Loreena McKennitt
So that's it. Please tell me where you are from (more or less), and which of these things you recognize. If you discovered them while in Canada, please say so.
Thanks!
EDITED to clear up any misconceptions about which Smarties I'm talking about.

Not inventing. But it's the norm up here and the exception almost everywhere I've been in the states (admittedly, I haven't been many places). This isn't about inventing. Just about what exists.

I grew up in Michigan (lived there until I was 17). I spent the last four years in Houston (except for the semester spent in Germany), and currently live in Georgia.
1. Great Big Sea--have heard of, don't think I've heard. 2. Red Green--have seen a few times. My brothers were fans. 3. Finger 11--Have heard. 5. Mr Dressup--I used to watch this every day! I love him! Casey freaked me out a bit, though. 6. Avril Lavingne--has anyone not heard of her? 8. Tim Horton's--Seen them all over the north, never eaten there. 10. The Guess Who--Have heard of, not heard. 12. Barenaked Ladies--again, has anyone not heardof them? 14. Kraft Dinner 16. Smarties 19. Jim Carrey--again, who hasn't 20. Guy Gavriel Kay--I have heard the name. Couldn't tell you what he does. 22. Gordon Lightfoot 23. Sarah McLaughlan--again, who hasn't? 24. Poutine 25. Nickleback 26. Bryan Adams 27. Wonderland--I assume you mean the Canadian version, not Alice's or any other? 28. Gordon Korman--Not only was I his biggest fangirl in fifth grade, I ate lunch with him in sixth! 29. (pre-sweetened) Iced Tea--Like Nestea? Or like sweet tea in the south? The two are quite different. 30. Loreena McKennitt

I just about died when I found out I was one of the kids who got to have lunch with him when he came to my middle school. I sat right next to him and was too awed to speak the whole hour.
And I have a question: Were Fred Penner and Under the Umbrella Tree Canadian as well? I just remember watching them along with Mr. Dress Up, whom I had never realized was Canadian.

Not Edvard Munsch. Robert Munsch, who is one of the best author of young children's books EVER. In the whole world. Especially my world. Everyone on this board needs to go to their local bookstore and demand a copy of The Paperbag Princess. It's only 99c for the small version. Seriously. Please go read it.

Doc's take on the list, leaving only stuff I've heard of, and context to let you decide if I'm right or not. I'm in California; I've only been to Canada to see Niagra Falls from the good side:
2. Red Green - Funny stuff. Enjoyed him on the last PBS pledge drive. 6. Avril Lavingne - She should, um, pull up her pants. 9. Degrassi - As in, the Junior High? 10. The Guess Who - Listen what I say. 12. Barenaked Ladies - But it only comes out as a yawn. 14. Kraft Dinner - Yes, thanks to the Barenaked Ladies 16. Smarties (the chocolate kind)- They had these in Brazil 17. Robert Munsch - Love You Forever is my wife's favorite. 18. Canadian Tire - Okay, is this the roadside service that has attractive young people come help you instead of heavy middle aged people? (I'm not insane--really. I was told this about some canadian roadside assistance company.) 19. Jim Carrey - Yes, and I'm regretting it less and less all the time. 22. Gordon Lightfoot - Mentioned in a hilarious Strong Bad Email 23. Sarah McLaughlan - Yeah, yeah. 25. Nickleback - The soundtrack band 26. Bryan Adams - Like no other 28. Gordon Korman - A friend of mine's favorite author
Guess I batted about .500

1. Great Big Sea 2. Red Green - my favorite episode was when they installed a sunroof in the side of a van with duct tape. The sad thing is, I know people like them. The even sadder thing is that it took me forever to realize that Pat McKenna was the same guy as in Traders. Talk about totally not the same guy. Or, uhm, uh. Oh forget it. 3. Finger 11 - my niece says they're awesome as she smiles with absolute glee and lust 4. Paul Gross - loved "Men with Brooms" - hilarious Canadian comedy movie, but Paul baby has a severe pottie mouth. Also he went to U of A same time as me. 5. Mr Dressup - grew up watching him. 6. Avril Lavingne 7. Rick Mercer - isn't he hockey or something? I've heard of him, just can't remember exactly how. 8. Tim Horton's - duh! How glad are you they finally have drive through? Unfortunately, I'm now in a country that doesn't have either doughnuts or hot chocolate. What the !@#!! am I doing here???? 9. Degrassi 10. The Guess Who - American Woman! Get away from me!!! 11. African Lion Safari 12. Barenaked Ladies - have all their albums. Yes, it's true. 13. Inukshuk - have earrings. Plus saw true Inukshuks when I was in NWT - Norman Wells. In the summer, thank heavens. And at the top of Mount Hamar. 14. Kraft Dinner 15. Due South - saad to admit, but I have watched it. 16. Smarties (the chocolate kind) 17. Robert Munsch - is he Canadian? 18. Canadian Tire - how much Cdn Tire money do you have in your kitchen drawer? 19. Jim Carrey 20. Guy Gavriel Kay - what, he's Canuck, too? Didn't know. 21. Harvey's 22. Gordon Lightfoot 23. Sarah McLaughlan 24. Poutine - good with vinegar and ketchup. Yum! 25. Nickleback 26. Bryan Adams - yep. And he also did a concert in Sri Lanka a few months back. 27. Wonderland 28. Gordon Korman 29. (pre-sweetened) Iced Tea 30. Loreena McKennitt - I like her music.
Well !@#@!! Not a single one I didn't recognize.
I lived all over western Canada - except for Saskatchewan, thank heavens. Talk about the armpit of the nation. But now I'm in Sri Lanka, the armpit of the world.

Without reading anyone else's responses, here's what I've got. Since I made random comments about all of them, I bolded the once I actually knew:
1. Great Big Sea — Er ... I know we've got a couple of those on either side of North America. Call 'em oceans. 2. Red Green — The colors my coworker Peter can't distinguish between. 3. Finger 11 — That's just gross. 4. Paul Gross — Speak of the devil! This name is so darn familiar, I have to look him up ... OH! The Due South guy! I KNEW I'd seen that name before! 5. Mr Dressup — Sounds like a really creepy kidnapper. 6. Avril Lavingne — Why did you have to go and make things so complicated? 7. Rick Mercer — Only name I can think of that's close is Mercer Mayer ... 8. Tim Horton's — Tim Horton's what? 9. Degrassi — We watched Degrassi Junior High in middle school! 10. The Guess Who — Is that like The Who in disguise? 11. African Lion Safari — Where can you see lions? Only in Kenya! 12. Barenaked Ladies — It's been one week since you looked at me ... 13. Inukshuk — Eh? 14. Kraft Dinner — Didn't BNL mention this in the "If I Had a Million Dollars" song? Anywaze, I eat Kraft macaroni and cheese all the time. 15. Due South — My favorite show in high school. Or one of them. One of my student films used the Due South soundtrack for its closing credits. 16. Smarties (the chocolate kind) — Yeah, heard of those. Don't like a lot of candies, though. 17. Robert Munsch — Totally familiar. No idea why. 18. Canadian Tire — I'm betting that's a slang term for some nasty food. 19. Jim Carrey — Duh. I mean, come on. 20. Guy Gavriel Kay — Isn't that one of the guys on Queer Eye? Sounds like it for some reason. 21. Harvey's — Where big, invisible rabbits are cooked and served for lunch. 22. Gordon Lightfoot — One more time, I would make a northwest passAGE! 23. Sarah McLaughlan — Never heard of her. I am a big fan of Sarah McLACHlan, though. I actually saw her first concert in over six years this past summer. 24. Poutine — Is that a medication to loosen up stubborn children? 25. Nickleback — This is how you remind me of what I really am. 26. Bryan Adams — Everything I do, I do it for you. 27. Wonderland — Where Alice went, right? 28. Gordon Korman — You made him up. 29. (pre-sweetened) Iced Tea — I just know the actor on Law & Order: SVU. 30. Loreena McKennitt — Hey, I thought this was a Canadian list! Isn't she Irish or Scottish or something? Maybe not. Anyway, I own ALL her albums.
Oh, and by the way, I grew up in North Carolina.

. Great Big Sea - band. Not sure what they sing, though. 6. Avril Lavingne - Singer. Heard maybe a few of her songs. Plus a Weird Al version of one. 7. Rick Mercer -- name sounds familiar, but can't place it 8. Tim Horton's -- I hear it compared to Krispy Kreme a lot. 9. Degrassi -- TV show 12. Barenaked Ladies -- band. I have a CD or two. Had a huge hit a few years ago with "One Week". 14. Kraft Dinner - mac & cheese. This is what I called it growing up as well. 15. Due South - TV south 16. Smarties (the chocolate kind) -- Like M&Ms, aren't they? 17. Robert Munsch - another name that sounds familiar, but I can't place it. 19. Jim Carrey - actor. duh. 20. Guy Gavriel Kay - fantasy writer 21. Harvey's - restaurant, I believe 22. Gordon Lightfoot 23. Sarah McLaughlan - singer 25. Nickleback - band 26. Bryan Adams - singer. I have one of his CDs. 29. (pre-sweetened) Iced Tea - they sell it here, too
edit: oops, just saw the thing about location. I'm from Chicago, and have lived here all my life.

1. Great Big Sea -- Seen them live something like six times. They're good friends of my brother-in-law (a Flamenco guitar player from Newfoundland. Not that GBS is flamenco, but I think there's some sort of safety in numbers out there).
2. Red Green -- Is Bill Carr still on the show? He performed at our local theatre festival (the Atlantic Theatre Festival) for many years. Also a really nice guy I've had the pleasure of hanging out with on a few occasions.
3. Finger 11 -- They were better when they were The Rainbow Butt Monkeys (I kid you not. This was their original name).
4. Paul Gross -- The Due South dude! My uncle was on the show once. Speaks highly of the Due South Dude.
5. Mr Dressup -- Ernie Coombs, rest in peace. Every Canadian child knows, remembers, loves and cherishes Mr. Dressup. He was a good friend of my ex-girlfriend's family. You've never met a nicer man.
6. Avril Lavingne -- The best thing about her is Weird Al's version of complicated.
7. Rick Mercer -- The man, the myth, the legend behind "Talking to Americans." Some Americans don't think Canadians think they're idiots. These Americans have clearly never seen "Talking to Americans." He's also the best thing that even happened to "This Hour Has 22 Minutes." One of the best fake news programs ever, although it kinda sucks now.
8. Tim Horton's -- The only corporation I know have to have so perfectly, completely and flawlessly integrated itself into the culture of a country. We are nothing without our Tim Horton's.
9. Degrassi -- Junior High. I never watched it, but it's referred to in hushed tones mostly reserved for brainwashed cultists by most people I know.
10. The Guess Who -- There are people who don't know The Guess Who? Criminal!
11. African Lion Safari -- This place always seemed kind of sad to me. I've never been. I'm also surprised it's on the list, would you know about it if you weren't from Southern Ontario?
12. Barenaked Ladies -- Yep. Seen them live a bunch of times as well. They performed at our small town's apple festival a few years ago. On of their mom's is from the area I believe.
13. Inukshuk -- These things are eerily beautiful. Anyone who hasn't seen some of the great Canadian movies about the North are required to go rent Atanarjuat (The Fast Runner) and Snow Walker immediately. You will hate yourself forever if you don't.
14. Kraft Dinner -- I can't stand KD. But how would Canadian college students survive without it?
15. Due South -- See Paul Gross.
16. Smarties (the chocolate kind) -- I still eat the red ones last. But they have to stop messing with the colours.
17. Robert Munsch -- He teaches at Guelph! How cool is that!? It also saddens and depresses me that Americans don't know him. Without I doubt the author behind the best children's literature ever made. Whenever a kid asks me for a story, it's inevitably one of his I recite.
18. Canadian Tire -- In fact, I have a few Canadian Tire Dollars in my wallet right now.
19. Jim Carrey -- Well, duh.
20. Guy Gavriel Kay -- twinky introduced me to him and then we had a good argument about him on Hatrack. Clearly not enough people are searching for every post I make.
21. Harvey's -- This doesn't exist in America? But, but, but, they make one of the best veggie burgers anywhere! And at a fast food joint no less. How could something so wrong be so right?
22. Gordon Lightfoot -- If someone hasn't heard of him it's their own fault. They must be living under a rock or something. And Rat seems to be confusing him with Stan Rogers. Which is a crime in all 13 provinces and territories.
23. Sarah McLaughlan -- Again, I think you have to make a conscious effort to avoid her. I haven't heard her newest album, but the one before it was beautiful. Fire up your Kazaa, people.
24. Poutine -- Call me crazy, but I never developed a taste for cheese curd and gravy on fries.
25. Nickleback -- You know, they were voted the worst thing ever to happen to rock music by a Brit Paper? He he. Good old fashioned straight up Canadian rock. You can't not love it. Well... some of it.
26. Bryan Adams -- People exist who haven't heard of Bryan Adams? Like, that's physically possible? He's one of the top selling musicians in the world (the Japanese are especially fond of him). Summer of '69? Everything I Do? Didn't anyone watch "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves"?
27. Wonderland -- As in Canada's Wonderland? That I got free tickets to all summer? That my place of employment rented for a day in August for it's employees? Good times, good memories.
28. Gordon Korman -- Never heard of him. I even looked him up to be sure. I feel like such a Canadian failure.
29. (pre-sweetened) Iced Tea -- It can exist in another form? Presweetened power = Iced Tea. It's a fact.
30. Loreena McKennitt -- The Highwayman is my favourite poem. She puts its words to song = love.
So, even though I'm Canadian I missed out on one. I grew up in Nova Scotia, in the Annapolis Valley for what it's worth.

I had never heard of Mr. Dressup or Tim Horton, but was otherwise familiar with them all (even if, as was the case with "Kraft dinner," I knew them as a wacky Canadian version of a better thing/phrase.)
I was born in Michigan, lived most of my life in the Chicago area, and am currently in Wisconsin.

I discovered none of these during the 3 hours I was in Canada when I was 8, nor during the 3 days I was in Canada for the Society for Music Theory Conference in 2000.

3. Finger 11 - band 6. Avril Lavingne - singer 8. Tim Horton's - donut, bakery place. several around 12. Barenaked Ladies - band 14. Kraft Dinner - food, cheesy 16. Smarties (the chocolate kind) - seen in grocery store in the british food section 19. Jim Carrey - actor 20. Guy Gavriel Kay - author: Tigana, read that 23. Sarah McLaughlan - singer 25. Most of these I've heard because they're singers or bands and their music gets played on radio stations I listen to. Tim Horton's have been creeping into Rhode Island (and I think I saw a ton of them in Montreal). I'm in Providence, Rhode Island
I've only been to Canada once, and that was Montreal for a weekend 3 weeks ago.

The Tim Horton's on my corner is the butt of a joke...just down the street is a police station. Celia, I know of clamato juice AND Men with Brooms which I very nearly had to watch when there were no other movies in a Toronto theater. Luckily, it was the last week they were showing LOTR. Most of the rest I knew without going to Canada.
UofU, there is still a Degrassi High show on TV. Where's the puking smilie?
