We adopted a lovely long-haired American Housecat today from the SPCA.
She's mostly black, some white...about 17 months old and has an absolutely AWESOME personality. Right now, Dan is laying on the floor in the living room in his sleeping bag, and she's curled up in there with him.
Her name is Ashlynd, and a picture of her can be seen here for another day or so. I've missed having a pet.
A few notes on adopting animals from the SPCA: You can't take the animal home the first day. If you have children, you will have to bring them to meet the animal before your application to adopt will even be considered. There's a fee to adopt, but it covers a thorough vet exam, shots, and spay/neuter. That means you're getting a healthy animal that won't spit out babies every few months. Cats and small dogs must be kept indoors, per the agreement you sign when you adopt. Larger dogs may be kept in a fenced yard.
All in all, it's been a very positive experience. I got an adult cat, whose temperament I already know. She's already made herself at home: since she already knows us, all she had to do was check out the house. I'm happy.

I brought home a kitten for my mother on Saturday. She had to leave her beloved cat behind when she moved in with me, so she had been missing him. She now has a cute little tiger striped girl named Myst.
My cat is not pleased.
