Maybe is all about perspective and waiting till after you die to be recognized, but it sometimes seems like there are not as many Masterpieces out in the fine arts or literature, etc...

The root of this post is a thought I had that the executives and moviemakers of today were the composers and literary geniuses of yesterday. Are the minds that used to be focused on making symphonies now at work making pop jingles for commercials or soundtracks for Hollywood "blockbusters" or the newest IRS handbook?

Yah, that Coleridge fellow is a drug-addled, two-bit hack who couldn't write a coherent bill of lading let alone poetry.

I think part of the reason for the perception is that when you look at the works of yesteryear, you generally only see the best of the best. There was a lot of crap created 50, 100, 200 years ago, just as it is made today. It's just that there aren't ad executives trying to convince us that we want to see 100 year old crap.
