First, sorry I haven't posted in a while...been kind of tired and busy. I'll get back to my other threads soon, I promise.
Thomas is doing very, very well. He's gained 1 3/4 inches head circumference, and put on almost a pound already!
Jennifer is healthy. She'll need to see an optometrist before school starts though...

Okay, Im impressed with the new doctor we've been assigned to. She spent almost an hour in the exam room with us and was very thorough and informative. She didn't seem rushed at all, and made us feel like she really cared about us and our health. She even wanted to check my incision and asked about MY health...and the appointment was just for the kids...
Anyway, we talked about Daniel and the problems we (and the school) have been having with him: the behavior stuff, bladder control issues, etc.
The first thing she asked after the exam, when we brought up these issues, was whether the school had offered to test him for the G/T program. Nope, the school said he was a normal boy who has problems controlling his behavior.
So, first of all, he's probably bored in class, since he's obviously very smart. He's also very vocal, and very specific about his likes and dislikes, and how he thinks things should work. That's why he gets in most of the trouble at school...he needs an outlet for his boredom. We're going to try a few things in the next couple of months to see if they help...
She took a urine sample to rule out persistent bladder infection for his bladder control, and suggested that if this issue doesn't straighten itself out by the end of summer she'd refer him to a pediatric urologist.
BUT...all of his problems could be related to lack of sleep. He's always been an early riser, but in the last year he's been staying up later and later. I hadn't really tied it his behavior (DUH!) because it's been so gradual. So she suggested that we try giving him Benadryl half an hour or so before bedtime for a week or two, to see if we can't change his sleeping patterns. She said it's possible that that's all his problem is...
She also said that the Benadryl may cause him to be more hyper, and that if that happens to call her and she'll send him to a behavioral specialist to test him for ADD/ADHD. (She also said she'd send him at the end of the summer if nothing else works.) AND, she said he should definitely be tested for G/T at the beginning of the school year.
SO, that's been my big day. I feel very good about our trip to the doctor. I like her just as much as I like my OB, and that's really saying something. So, it looks like we have a new family doctor.

I know I don't post a whole lot, and we don't 'talk', but I have been worrying about you and Daniel a little. I'm so glad to hear that your doctor has a Plan and Ideas.
I have a...challenging...kid, too, and I follow your posts eagerly. *smile*

It's great to see you again and to hear that all is mostly going well for you, Boon.
Finding a family doctor is definitely a good thing. I was taken to the same doctor from birth until I was 13. ... But then I also haven't seen a doctor in 4 years because my mother refuses to take me anywhere else and I flat out refuse to go there. (He, my doctor, is... well, a "he", and a very gruff old "he" at that. )

There really is nothing quite as wonderful as a good doctor. Sounds like you really found a keeper, Boon!

I assume that if Daniel becomes hyperactive after taking the Benadryl, which knocks most kids out, that would be a sign that he needs the opposite kind of medication? (a stimulant?)

I had the same doctor for about 18 years. I haven't been able to get myself consistently to doctor's appointments since. Good doctors are so important. This woman sounds perfect!

She didn't say that he would need a stimulant if Benadryl hypes him up, but she did say that it would be an indication that he may be "wired differently."
Haven't tried it yet, but will be purchasing some probably tomorrow.

Well, folks, there's good news and there's bad news.
The good news is that Benadryl helps him sleep better, and he's falling asleep at a more reasonable hour and staying asleep all night. Also, he's only had wet pants one out of three nights now.
The bad news is that he's bouncing off the walls more than ever during the day.
Wonder what that means...
I'm expecting to hear from the doctor tomorrow or Tuesday...I'll ask her then.
