When we had the plans drawn for our home, I asked to have a formal living room at the front of the house. Wes wanted instead to just have a large family room, stating that formal living rooms never get used.
I countered with "But it's not going to be a formal living room, it's going to be a library."
So...we put the room in, made plans to have some cabinets and bookshelves custom built. I was happy, I would have my library. Always wanted a library in my house.
Six years later. No library.
Having and raising kids and paying for so many other things put a big damper on the custom cabinetry. No $4000-$6000 to spare.
Today, though, on my 33rd birthday, my husband has come through. He has, like the Beast did for Belle, given me a library.
Okay, so it's not the floor to ceiling shelves I wanted. And, we'll probably still need to have some custom shelves built along the other wall.
You can probably see where we took up some carpet. We set the unit on the subfloor, and we're getting new carpet installed in two weeks. I'm going to make some curtains, hang some pictures, and finish filling out the shelves. Oh, and move the desktop computer from the upstairs office (about to become a playroom)to the library. Oh, and unpack dozens of boxes of books stored in the basement. yeah, we'll need more shelves for sure.
I am happy.
Edit: Belle is an idiot at HTML

The second link isn't working for me and the first pic is kind of hard to see. But from what I can see, it looks awesome. And what a lovely and thoughtful thing for Wes to do!

It's real wood, too! No MDF, or whatever that compressed fiber material is.
It came to us secondhand, from a lawyer's office. Got some dings and a few scratches, could be refinished and look like new. But, I kinda like the scratches. I don't want it to look brand new. Besides, no anxiety about the kids scratching it that way!
I have a gorgeous striped fabric picked out for the drapes....

I'll be on AIM tomorrow night, fire department night. Right now I need to run downstairs. Wes also got new office furniture delivered today.
Did I mention we are virtually remodeling half the house? During the absolute busiest month of the year for us? Dance recitals, end of school, birthdays, May is a terrible month for us to be planning all this stuff!
