This was an assignment for science , of all classes. But, if anyone's as bored as I am, then you can amuse yourself with these riddles (it should take you all of two minutes, so this won't subside your boredom for long, let alone the two minutes during which you complete it ) ---------- A man builds a rectangular house. All sides have southern exposure. A bear walks by the window. What color is it? Why?
Two men play five games of checkers. They each win the same amount of games. There are no ties. Explain this.
A woman gives a beggar fifty cents. The woman is the beggar's sister, but the beggar is not the woman's brother. Explain this.
How many outs are in an inning?
Divide 30 by 1/2 and add 10. What is the answer?
Divide nine by 2 to get 4. Explain how you can do this.
Do they have a fourth of July in Britain?
How many birthdays does the average American have?
How many months have 28 days?

When we learned sig figs we learned to round to whatever the next digit said to. Thus 179.8 with three sig figs is 180.

Hey Kat - it's not that you can't look at a second sig fig to round up. In fact you have to. So 4.9 in one s.f = 5 (as common sense suggests)
I was taught always to round to the nearest even number when the decimal was .5 - so that would give an answer of 4.
Of course, there might be some other smarty pants way to answer the question without using significant figures, and we're all wrong

I was going to mention something about leap day, then I realized that those people born on leap day still have one birthday, they just only celebrate it at the right time once every four years.

Purple. Man, if your like, so zone man that like, all the walls of your house face south, well, man, you got some goooood stuff, and like, I always see the purple bears when I get the gooood stuff. Whoa dude, there goes one now.
Two men play five games of checkers. They each win the same amount of games. There are no ties. Explain this. Each man, as usual, lies.
A woman gives a beggar fifty cents. The woman is the beggar's sister, but the beggar is not the woman's brother. Explain this. First explain to me why the sister only gives her desparate sibbling just 50 cents. She is a cheap #@$ %#$$%#@
How many outs are in an inning? To steal a better answer--and change it a bit--3 per side, and the home teams third baseman.
Divide 30 by 1/2 and add 10. What is the answer? Duuuude. I don't have that many toes.
Divide nine by 2 to get 4. Explain how you can do this. Nine can be divided into to, Ni and Ne. Ni is ancient Welsch for Fore, as in "The Knights that say Ni." They were actually Scottish Knigits building the worlds first golf course--which is why they needed shrubbery. That is not the question. Saying Ni is Welsh for Fore, and then transliterate that into common english, we get the pun of Four.
NI is also the atomic symbol for Nickel, which would give us 5 cents, but we are looking for 4. It is, however in the 4th Period of the Periodic Table. (Ne, Neon, is in the 10th period, so that doesn't help us one pit.)
Do they have a fourth of July in Britain? No. well, it exists, but most everyone sleeps in, or goes around looking at US celbrities like Micheal Jackson, J-Lo, and the Osborns and cries, "Look what we've started. Wahhh"
How many birthdays does the average American have? I plan on about 3 Bday parties a week, but I like cake and icecream.
How many months have 28 days? 473 that I can attest to so far. Posts: 11895 | Registered: Apr 2002

The first to get everything but the 9/2=4 problem is Katharina. The way to get 1/2 of 9 to equal 4 is in using roman numerals (zgator).

It shouldn't be "divide nine by 2 to get 4". It should be "halve nine" or "divide nine into two".
