The following is Hurt written by Tent Rez... the dude from Nine Inch Nails. It was originally recorded by Nine Inch Nails, Johnny Cash made a cover of it earlier this year. Personally I preffer Cash's version but which ever performance you like more it is a good song.
Hurt I hurt myself today To see if I still feel I focus on the pain The only thing that's real The needle tears a hold The old familiar sting Try to kill it all away But I remember everything
Chorus: What have I become My sweetest friend Everyone I know goes away In the end And you could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of thorns Upon my liar's chair Full of broken thoughts I cannot repair Beneath the stains of time The feelings disappear You are someone else I am still right here
Chorus: What have I become My ssweetest friend Everyone I know goes away In the end And you could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt
If I could start again A million miles away I would keep myself I would find a way
The lines of the song are very signifigant to me these days, and I beleive they may ring true to some other Hatrackers.
The lines in particular that hold the most meaning to me right now are:
quote: What have I become My sweetest friend Everyone I know goes away In the end
quote: I will let you down I will make you hurt
quote: Full of broken thoughts I cannot repair Beneath the stains of time The feelings disappear You are someone else I am still right here
I hope everyone else who identifies with this song can get to a place in their life where it seems strange and foriegn to you.
feel free to mention any particularly relevent songs to you.

I love the "chords" (they're actually just open octaves) Trent uses in the choruses... they lift the song and almost, just when it seems the song will break free... at the moment of hope... it turns back dissonant on the line "I will make you hurt". Powerful stuff and a GREAT song.
And yes, they ring true... I think we all go through periods of self-destructive feelings.
I personally feel the "I will let you down... I will make you hurt" very strongly. It, seems to be a summation of my effect on other people, IRL.

And I think it's "The needle tears a hole" but I could be wrong.
In Trent's version, he also says "crown of sh*t" <grimace>
I think I like the Cash version better, though Trent has that whole pathetic, I'm-terribly-broken thing going for him. For some reason, I'm into the tormented ones sometimes.

draw the shades to close my eyes i never want to see again i found the cost of courage high sometimes hard to pay i hear the songs the sirens sing calling on the shores for me so sell your soul and try to fly the tether still remains and all the finer things they laid upon my table smiled as their hooks were slowly sinking in
another pill for me to consume to make me feel again is followed by another one to make me loose the same god if i could recognize the things to make me whole again and draw this air into my lungs remember how to breathe
for as the curtain rose i danced as i was able felt my deception slowly sinking in
and so i turned to you my love for the solace that is there and offer any cherished thing for a slight repreive i hoped that you might find me here and i could learn to smile again and as a balm for these wounds take away the sting
and as the band did play your body i did cradle i should have known that song would have to end
Slow
all this time i thought this coming down was fine now everythig i fought to grow is whithered hanging on that vine
Chorus: and all i wanted was all i needed you know and everything good in my life if you have to take it all away oh no, take it all away, oh no, no, no take it slow
everything i try to find is every love i'll never hold and in your garden now the weeds are choking seeds we've sown
chorus
now you find your own savior for a time and if you try my love i hope you'll find your cure in time
chorus

This song makes me think of a really tough time I went through recently. I cried when I heard it...and cried when I read the lyrics. edit- referring to orignal song, as sung by Cash.
