It has been so long since I was last at Hatrack River, I hardly recognized the place. It’s amazing how much it has grown since I was last here. But some things never change. The smithy still anchors the town like it always did. And to see people walking the dirt streets really brought a sense of nostalgia back for the old days. I have grown too used to cobblestones, and the dust, while hard on the hem of my skirts, brings back all sorts of lovely memories. Of course, there are lots more people than there used to be. But that’s what happens with progress, I suppose.
My walk along the storefronts and in the town square was wholly pleasant, even though the air was not as fresh as it once was. Too many horses, I expect. I did see gray striped prisoners out picking up the horse leavings, but it’s unseemly to even look at them and even more so to mention it. Diary, forget I wrote anything about it, will you?
One thing was wholly unpleasant, though, and I hesitate to even write it for it was too horrid. A group of black riders barreled down the narrow streets, much too fast for the foot traffic. Surely someone would be killed, I thought, and I was right. Everyone scattered as they tore through town, and by the looks on their faces, these mysterious black riders aren’t complete strangers. The seamstress, Peggy, who is making me a new shirt, turned pale when I asked her about them, and clamped her lips shut. She wouldn’t speak of them at all. How curious. In any case, dearest Diary, I watched as they rode a young man down, trampling him with their steel shod hooves. It hardly bore thinking that the poor man was still alive after being flattened so thoroughly. I tried not to look, but Diary, I just couldn’t help myself. His blood soaked into the hard packed dirt, to make a sick sort of mud. I did ask the too silent seamstress the man’s fate. Dead indeed, and most vile murder it was. Peggy told me his name was msquared and that he was a fine citizen. What a peculiar name. I hope someone told his family.
Oh well. Diary, I go tomorrow to visit Aunt Gwendolyn, which should make for a very interesting time. She is sure to know what the black rider business is all about, and if I bring her the chocolates I got her back in Pennsylvania, she’s sure to tell me.
Sincerely ever yours, Miss Jenny Wren

Ouch. Msquared gets cut down on the first day. My condolences.
I'd ask for a list of everyone playing so we can start narrowing down who might be mafia, but it seems kind of pointless right now, as everything begins randomly.
And what do horse leavings have to do with all this?

Brettly, yes. The police have until 9pm to ask me their question.
msquared, I'm sorry you were the first to go. You can have the first round "msquared is untouchable" in the next game I host.

It says in the rules that I will reveal each person's identity as they are killed. That's what that line is about.

I think it was Dead_Horse . Just a guess, but since Msquared bit the big one under thundering hooves...

Now Sopwith, Let's not go flogging a Dead_Horse with no proof. Although, I found Brettly10's response a little shifty. I'm gonna keep my eye on him.

I'm a novice at this game, but I can already see strategies at work here. My guess is that no guess is completely random. I think Avadaru has something up her sleeve.

I'm so confused -- and I'm not even playing. Did the mafia kill one of their own on the first day? If so, why?

Everyone I'm gonna make a chat called Hatrack Mafia Chat. There we can talk about who to lynch etc.

I'm confused by the confusion. msquared was a citizen. Where are you getting the idea he was mafia? (just wondering what I said that is leading to that idea)

I think that it's Narnia, because she asked if there were going to be citizens in this game after the emails were sent out. She would have known there were citizens if she had gotten an email saying she was one.

I think I'll have to go with Narnia as well. That post was just a little weird, and I agree with hansenj. Plus, if she was the sheriff, my guess is that there would be many posts attempting to sway our votes.....

I'm voting for Narnia because we need to have at least some of the votes for the same people, or it will be one vote for everyone and that would be pointless!

Hmmm, I think I'll go with Narnia , just because I like her name so much. And also there appear to be a few votes for her already, so I'm adding to the count. I mean we have to lynch somebody, don't we? (dang, there's no face for "I'm sorry I voted for you, but it just had to be done" )

You know, it's so sad that msquared got killed and now we all suspect Narnia (I know that was my doing ) because they are both new to the game. But then again, we do have to lynch someone, and with this many new people (heck, even I'm pretty new to online mafia!) I guess it's unavoidable.

I have AIM, but I don't know how to get into a chat. Stupid Walmart internet service. I've been having trouble with email, and getting kicked off suddenly and often.
And just because I am a Dead_Horse is not an invitation to beat me. Be nice.
Just what is it we are voting for? Are we supposed to guess who the sheriff is, or who killed msquared, or what?

Okay, I re-read the thread and I get it now. I would have voted for msquared, but since he's dead...or is suicide allowed? So I vote for Sopwith

Ouch! My first game and I'm going down! Mark was innocent and SO AM I!! (Am I allowed to lobby?) I'm voting for Ryan Hart cause he's been real quiet and that line between he and fugu about forming an alliance has me suspicious.

Now, fellow citizens. Let us not be hasty in our judement to this poor soul. How could Narnia possibly be a member of organized crime--surely Law Enforcement will protect us all in the end.
Do not lynch someone out of hand, but rather present your reasons if you wish to persuade others. Then we can turn them over to the Proper authorities and Justice will be served.

Okay, sorry I've been gone all day (wicked combination of work and school). These are the votes that I've tallied so far. (And no one's really given any concrete reasons yet):
And now for those who've posted but haven't voted:
Brettly10 advice for robots jehovoid (I don't see why I should. I don't have anything on Narnia, except that alot of people seem to want to kill him (her?) off. I don't suspect anyone else either, so I don't see why I should vote for anyone else, possibly incurring the wrath of the mafia. Anyway, it's only round one, and no matter what happens, the townies still have the odds. That's my long-winded reason for not voting.)
(This game is so nerve-wracking)
Anyway, I just did this post for me as well as you so that we can all keep track of who's doing what.

Edit to add: If I did have any concrete reasoning, it would be for the people who were acting, I don't know, rabid about finding the answer. But that's the nature of fear, and this early in the game, I'd rather just be random.
You know, my reasoning is about as concrete as you get in mafia (unless we were playing with keywords or the sheriff announced who they were). I really wouldn't want to vote for Narnia if I didn't suspect her because it is her first game of mafia. I'd rather let her play, but since she's the only one I have any idea about, that's who I'll vote for.

Jeniwren said she would post the verdict of the hanging @ 9 o'clock Pacific Time. That's midnight EST, right? Or am I just halucinating?

Maybe I just have a suspicious mind, but Brettly10's post strike me as exceedingly odd.
quote: Jeni are saying mafia as in he was killed by mafia or that his role was mafia? It makes no sense for the mafia to kill one of their own.
It really was pretty clear (to me, at least), even before jeniwren edited the kill, that msquared was a citizen. But for a mafioso, causing that sort of confusion is useful.
quote: Dead horse is as good of a guess as any. Plus he is easy to beat!!!!!!
quote: Ohh seee I do remember this from Mafia in the past. The more you talk the quicker you die. The smart mafia people will post maybe one time and that is it. Sir Real I am watching you that gauntlet heading for the ground any time now.
Hmm, and who is talking one of the most?
And after all that, no actual VOTE.
I vote for Brettly10.

Evie, actually, I said that voting closes at 9pm Pacific, not that I will post the victim's death. I'll do that in the morning.
Voting, btw, is closed. And asQmh, you have til noon tomorrow to contact me via email. Then you will be dead of natural causes.
