Since two of my adversaries in The Great GreNME Challenge of 2003 are currently on hiatus from Hatrack (Caleb and John), I figure it's safe to test my new material on the remainder of the Hatrack audience
The night before last I was in the mood to write something really heavy. The first riff I wrote was the hard palmed one about 2/3 in. The tune is longer than it should be, because I got carried away, and it just begs for a rock band backing it. It's called Frustration.
Then, last night, I was in a really weird mood. Oddly enough it was due at least in part to something that happened in Slash's play-by-email RPG. FlyingCow wrote a long message that was so well done it left me feeling bad. It mellowed me out and when that happens I generally need to play or write. So Lobotomized, which is one of my more complex efforts to date (there are seven tracks) came out of my guitar over a perioud of ~2.5 hours late at night. It's completely different from anything I've written before, because I was trying to write something that wouldn't feel like it needed a band and singer backing it up. Thus it naturally gravitated to a more electronically-influenced style, even though I played every single note in the song on the guitar.
I feel much better now, though my fingers are still sore. What I'm not sure of is which of the songs I recorded this summer to submit as my entry to the contest I created (I challenged GreNME and all other comers – including Thor and Caleb Varns) to record a musical work by the end of September. So far, unless I want to re-record one of my one-track guitar numbers (like Frustration, for example), I have to use either Lobotomized or Paikea, a tune I put together after seeing Whale Rider.

Y'know, if I had access to some sort of recording equipment, I'd like to enter the contest too. I don't think I'll be anywhere near a mic until after the deadline is passed, though *tear*.
The crappy computer I'm on right now doesn't have speakers, either, so I can't hear the weird riffs. *much more relevant tears*

Twink, I wish I had the bandwidth right now to hear it, but my dialup's down around 20k right now, and even this text stuff is crawlin'.
But I do understand what you mean about riffs and moods. I definitely wrote my best stuff in strange moods! (Synthesizer, by the way. Roland JV-35, tied in with my PC.)
As soon as I have a decent connection I'll have to hear your stuff. I am intrigued....

You've never heard Twink's stuff, eslaine? Don't worry, it's worth the download time!
Perform a little "music" search on this forum, there's lots of talented musicians here, I've noticed...
I'm getting really antsy here in Alaska...my amp was too big to bring with me when I moved from Hawaii, so I haven't had any nice distorted guitar-sounds in a looooong while. *even more tears*

Dude, I don't know how *I'm* living without my amp. DO you know how HARD it is to write heavy stuff when all you have is an acoustic?
I REALLY want to hear "Paikea".
Sorry, but I still can't offer my opinion. Hopefully I'll be able to get on a better computer tomorrow and hear 'em.

If by "hard" you mean "impossible," then yes
My writing has just about reached the limit of how heavy I can get without having a band to back me up during the writing process.
I think maybe if I can ever afford it I'll hire a few musicians, book some studio time, and lay down an album. Then I'll get some copies made for my friends.

ERGH! I still haven't been able to get on a better computer! (I'm at a lodge in Alaska, and I'm using the employee computers, which kinda SUCK. Someday soon my dad's gonna be able to get me onto the maintenance crew's computers, and I'll finally have speakers...)
<-- wants to hear Twinky's stuff

The links in my posts earlier in this thread don't work anymore. I finally bit the bullet and registered a domain tonight, along with setting up some hosting; now all of my stuff that's in .mp3 format is hosted in one place all at once. No more rotating songs.
I'm not sure that most of the internet knows my domain exists yet, but over the next couple of days that should happen.

Twinky's stuff is always solid. If anything, his music always has atmosphere to it, so even if the riff is simple, or the song is "drawn out" it's still entertaining.
I wish had more knowledge of music, so that I could write songs instead of fiddle around with the fret board and play covers. (Which is a bit sad, considering that Ive been playing for 3 years.)

The great thing about having twink living in the same house as me is that he, like many other great musicians, is far better live than on a recording (and you and I both know how much his recordings don't suck)

Now that my brand spanking new domain is officially live, all 63MB of my music that exists as .mp3s is hosted concurrently in the same place. Sometime tonight I'll probably have an index of it all, but if you want to hear anything before then the URL is easy:
domain.name/music/songname.mp3
I realize that I could just stick a .htaccess file in the directory and allow people to view its contents, but my domain hasn't even been live for 12 hours yet, so I figure it's not a big deal to make people wait till tonight
Edit: I also updated the links in my first post to point to the new domain.
Anyhoo, good stuff, as usual, Twink. Paikea was weirdly interesting, and I liked Lobotomized. Frustration was a bit long, as you mentioned, but once you cut it down and get a band to back it, will be AWESOME. I wish I could hear this LIVE at a concert. 'Twould be cool.
Some of your older stuff that stood out (to me): Almost Whimsy and Farewell. I'm also still fond of Tigana. (BTW, I just picked up the book at a used bookstore after hearing your song. )

Glad you liked my stuff sometimes I wish I was in a band and had someone to play Plant to my Page, but other times I feel like I should either just play all of the instruments myself or hire musicians so there aren't any arguments... I dunno.
Tigana is a fantastic book.
