Ok, I recently upgraded from ME to XP(home) about 2 months ago, just recently I have been having problems with my Norton firewall. If I leave my computer on long enough, the firewall changes to not letting me disable it, claiming that I am not the comptuer's administrator and that only the admin. can do that. The thing is, its only been happening in the last few weeks and there is only one logon for the computer. I've tried calling Norton but they have been no help. Any suggestions?

That's the funny thing, I went to control panel, User Account, and it said that my account is the only account and it says it is the administrator account.

Wait, is there some kind of virus or error that fools your computer into thinking the admin. account is not really the admin. account?

Sometimes when I try to disable the firewall it stops me and pops up and says "Only the system administrator may preform this function."
It also restricts other options of dealing with the firewall when I call up the firewall program itself.

I don't know what version of Nortion you have, 2002 or 2003? I've been searching the knowledge base and came up with this as a possible solution. Try one at a time, go slowly and if all else fails delete the application and reinstall. Hope this helps.
NIS or NPF starts in the disabled mode or the icon does not appear in the system tray Situation: After you install Norton Internet Security (NIS) or Norton Personal Firewall (NPF), you cannot access the settings or options of the program, or the NIS or NPF icon does not appear in the system tray. You notice that the settings appear dimmed and you may see a "Supervisor not logged in" error message when you click the Options icon.
Solution: This problem has a variety of causes. See the section for your version of NIS or NPF. If that does not resolve the problem, then see the section Other causes and solutions.
To fix this with NIS or NPF 2003 This problem can occur if ccApp and ccRegVfy are not enabled at startup or the installation of NIS or NPF 2003 is corrupted.
Follow these steps to ensure ccApp and ccRegVfy are enabled on Windows startup: 1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run screen appears. 2. Type msconfig in the box, and then click OK. The System Configuration screen appears.
NOTE: The Msconfig.exe file is not included with Windows 2000. For more information on this topic, see the Windows 2000 section in the document How to start the computer in Safe mode.
3. Click the Startup tab. 4. Navigate the list and locate the following entries: ccApp and ccRegVfy. 5. Ensure that these entries have a check in the box next to them. 6. Click OK. 7. Choose Yes to reboot the computer.
How to Uninstall and then reinstall NIS or NPF 2003 If enabling ccApp and ccRegVfy do not fix this problem, NIS or NPF 2003 will need to be uninstalled then reinstalled. For instructions on these steps, see the following documents: How to uninstall Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall 2003 How to install NIS or NPF
To fix this with all other versions of NIS or NPF This problem can occur if Iamapp.exe and Nisserv.exe are not enabled at startup.
Follow these steps to ensure the files are enabled on Windows startup: 1.
4. Navigate the list and locate the following entries: Iamapp.exe and Nisserv.exe. 5. Ensure that these entries have a check in the box next to them. 6. Click OK. 7. Choose Yes to reboot the computer.
Other causes and solutions • Manually enable the Iamapp.exe file. Follow these steps to enable Iamapp.exe: 1. Open Windows Explorer. 2. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security. 3. Locate and double-click the Iamapp.exe file. • There may be a timing conflict. For information on fixing timing problems, see the document How to change when NIS or NPF loads during Windows startup. • Confirm that the computer date is correct. Follow these steps to verify the computer date: 1. Click Start and then point to Settings. 2. Click Control Panel. 3. Double-click Date/Time. 4. Confirm that the computer date is correct. 5. Click OK. • If changing the startup location of NIS or NPF does not fix the problem, remove NIS or NPF using the Rnis.exe tool. For information on using the Rnis.exe tool, see the document How to uninstall Norton Internet Security or Personal Firewall using the Rnis.exe removal utility. After running the Rnis.exe tool, clean boot the computer and reinstall NIS or NPF. • Many programs are loaded and run in the background without your intervention. Clean booting your computer eliminates the possibility of a conflict with one of these programs. To clean boot your computer, follow the instructions in one of the these documents, depending on your Operating System: How to perform a clean boot of Windows 98 How to perform a clean boot of Windows Me How to perform a clean boot of Windows NT How to perform a clean boot of Windows 2000 How to perform a clean boot of Windows XP
