Perhaps there is a natural equilibrium level that the oceans maintain, and the melting of the icecaps is the global system's response to man's impoundment of fresh water such as in China's Three Gorges project .
It might be interesting to correlate the volume of glacial ice that has melted since man began building dams to the volume of fresh water impounded.

To kudzo and aspen, add the lovely purple loosestrife, which can take over both land and water.
Hmm. We battle it here in the northeast, but when the water level of the earth gets to high, we will be trying to get it to grow to take back the dirt.
