I'm going to add proud to dumb and lazy. Some folks refuse to learn another language out of pride; they think the language that they learned as a child is better than any other. Dumb mostly applies to people who never even learned a first language. And lazy is me; I don't want to spend time learning a new language just so that I can talk to my neighbor.
If we all knew English, French, and Spanish, there would be nothing stopping us from traveling freely throughout North America, trading and working and raising our families without becoming a cost burden. The European Union works and Europeans are able to travel and work freely because so many Europeans know a second language.
