My opinion is this: when you say, "Such and such would have been the right thing to do," but then say, "I don't want to get into 'what-if' discussions," then you're making an unfair criticism.
It's a criticism obviously. It's unfair because to refuse to examine the way things were or appeared to be to the decision-makers involved is to judge people in the past by modern standards, to be arbitrary and unfair, since they of course did not know then what we know now.
