When I was in college, I took part in one of those Twister events where they're trying to set a record for most people playing. I was disappointed to discover that the really cute coeds didn't seem to want to join the groups of geeky engineers playing.
No one got naked either. At our particular mat, that was a good thing.

The one Zan is describing is a little RenFaire. The premier ones in Florida are the Florida Renaissance Festival (DANGER: Obnoxiously musical websites). Unfortunately, either one entails at least a couple of hours driving for us, which isn't so much fun with two little ones. The one in Deerfield Beach (Southernish Florida) is weekends January 31 to February 29. The one in Live Oak (North Florida) is in September. I've been to the Deerfield Beach one and it's awesome. If you don't have a big RenFaire where you are, this one may be worth traveling for. I don't honestly know if this local one is. (Though I would love to meet you . . . tell me again where you live?)
I don't have a room to offer at this time because my life is too upside-down these days, between my class, the play, the girls, the dogs, etc etc etc. However, the Orlando area is cheap hotel central.

Icarus is right. The one I mentioned is pretty small, but it's close to home for us CFer's. There's another one in Gainesville that's much bigger, but that's about 2 or 2.5 hours away. Thus far, Ryan seems capable of about 1.5 hours or so before he's over the car ride thing.
I've never been to the one down south, but I've been to the one at the Ringling grounds in Sarasota many times. That's where I bought my first sword. It's a shame they don't do that one anymore.
Icarus, change the title again so Storm will get off his tuckus and let us know if the one in Lady Lake is any good.

We don't do hot without the muggy. After hundreds of years of cross-breeding senior citizens and immigrants, we've developed the genetic ability to navigate based on humidity. Take the moisture away and we would all plunge straight into the ocean.

So Chris posts in this thread but still fails to mention whether a RenFaire would be of interest to him . . . . . . it's not like I propositioned his wife when we last met or anything!

Shan, if you do come down, just be sure and let us know!

A Ren Fair would be something I would very much enjoy going to. The last one I went to was in Tempe, AZ. about ten years a go? So, I haven't been to the one in Lady Lake, or any at all in Florida, in fact.
The problem is that I may or may not be able to afford to go, depending on the time that everyone goes to it. Yes, I am just that broke. And, no, I don't want someone to pay for me.
Decide amongst yourselves what date would be good and if I can go, I will let you know.
Thanks for keeping me in mind, though, and bringing the thread to my attention again.

The date would be 2/21(Sat.) or 2/22(Sun.) and tickets are $10.
You have to go Storm. Do you have any idea what that will do for your fellow CF Hatrackers' notoriety. Forget meeting celebrities like Ralphie or TomD. We would be the only ones that could say we've met the one and only Storm Saxon.
And where's Rakeesh? I know it's a bit of a drive for him, but that would be great if he could come to.

I absolutely would not pay for you, Storm. You should definitely pay your own way; shame on you for suggesting otherwise.
However, I'm sure somebody in our group would be agreeable to lending you the $10, to be repaid on a future clump outing.

For the record, I would be up for a RenFaire. My attendance to the suggested events is limited to availabilty and costs, and this fits in nicely. No other reason. Ahem.
So Icarus, what the hell is wrong with my wife? Not good enough for you, waxwings?

I would also be up for RenFaire. The price and the notice are quite reasonble; I could make it to Jamaica in my car given enough time for a Clump gathering.

My dear Mr. Bridges, you misunderstand. It was only out of consideration/sympathy/pity for you that I did not turn on my considerable charm and woo the divine Ms. B away from you.

Hmm. Problem, Zan. That weekend is one of the weekends we're putting on Barefoot in the Park.
Doesn't necessarily mean we can't go. Saturday's show isn't until 8 pm, so I might be able to do both. But it will complicate my life. In any case, I would say that Sunday's not possible for me, because our Sunday show is earlier (6 pm).

Bob, Daytona in February sounds great.

Ask mack - I don't do AIM. I tried once, long ago - Cor invited me, and I just couldn't get it to work. (Sigh) Technophobe, I swear.
September is generally less humid, right? Fewer tourists? Perhaps Stormy will have saved up money by then to join a clump gathering? I thknk I read there was a renfaire in the fall, too -
I have a friend (Nathan's godmother) that lives in N. Carolina - it would be neat to visit her and you and whomever else and September would give me a goal and something to plan/save (emphasis on save) for!

You know I rarely make it on to Hatrack on the weekend, Icarus. Don't get all huffy.
I'm still up for it. I'll go back and check their site again and see if they have any schedules posted yet. I don't want to miss the jousting if they're doing it.

Well, since it was your idea, I assumed you were up for it.
By the way, folks, don't click on the link to Expedia for directions to the Fair. They are WRONG. Expedia can't figure out where Howey-In-The-Hills is, so it sends you to Sanford instead. I sent them an e-mail about this (their own site linking you to wrong directions!!!) but I don't know if they've done anything about it or not. Instead, cut and paste their address into MapQuest. While MapQuest is frequently mistaken as well, at least they know where Tavares is.

I like you, Mr. Icarus. I think it would be pretty cool to spend time with you and the rest of the CF clump, but now is not a good time.

I'll check with the familial units and see what's up, but I think it's doable. What's the travel time to the Faire from, say, Sanford?

Expedia seems to have fixed their error since I wrote them. Are maps postable? Apparently not . . .
Expedia - 35.2 miles, 44 minutes
code:
Start: Depart Start on W 22nd St (East) 0.1 < 1min 1: Turn LEFT (North) onto US-17 [US-17 92] 1.4 0:03 2: Turn LEFT (West) onto SR-46 [W 1st St] 22.0 0:23 3: Keep STRAIGHT onto SR-46 [Sanford Rd] 0.1 < 1min 4: Keep STRAIGHT onto SR-46 [E 1st Ave] 0.5 0:01 5: Turn RIGHT (North) onto CR-500A [N Highland St] 0.3 0:01 6: Turn LEFT (West) onto CR-500A [E 5th Ave] 0.5 0:01 7: Keep STRAIGHT onto CR-500A [W 5th Ave] 0.1 < 1min 8: Keep STRAIGHT onto CR-500A [W Old US-441] 1.9 0:03 9: Turn LEFT to stay on CR-500A [W Old US-441] 0.8 0:01 10: Keep STRAIGHT onto CR-500A [Old US-441] 1.4 0:02 11: Keep STRAIGHT onto CR-500A [E Alfred St] 1.1 0:02 12: Keep STRAIGHT onto CR-500A [W Alfred St] 0.3 0:01 13: Keep STRAIGHT onto CR-500A [Lakeshore Blvd] 0.2 < 1min 14: Turn LEFT (South) onto SR-19 [N Duncan Dr] 4.5 0:06 End: Arrive End < 0.1 < 1min Total Route 35.2 mi 44 mins
mapquest, on the other hand, can get you there in only 33 miles, but 48 minutes.
quote:1: Start out going North on S FRENCH AVE/US-17 92/US-92 toward W 13TH ST. 0.7 miles 2: Turn LEFT onto FL-46 W/W 1ST ST. Continue to follow FL-46 W. 21.8 miles 3: Merge onto US-441 N/FL-500 N. 8.3 miles 4: Turn LEFT onto FL-19 S. 2.1 miles 5: End at 27341 STATE ROAD 19 TAVARES FL Total Est. Time: 48 minutes Total Est. Distance: 33.09 miles
Now, comparing MapQuest directions to Expedia directions from my own house, the MapQuest ones are better . . . they are more detailed and aware of streets near my house. The Expedia directions are (now) intelligible, but they incorrectly have me starting from Old Lake Wilson to US-192, when Old Lake Wilson does not run from my home to US-192.

Oh man! I love RenFaires and I'm actually going to be in Florida this weekend!
However... I'm going to be on a school trip to Disney and we're not allowed to leave the park.
If anyone feels like coming to hear me (and a ton of other kids from my highschool) sing on Saturday we'll be in Epcot at 5:15pm on the Future World Stage...

Dragon, do you get to spend all day at the park before you sing. My sister got to do that a few times while she was in high school.
Anyhoo, my pass for Disney has expired and I've moved on to a pass at Universal. It will be a while before I make it back to Disney.
Jeff, if you come on Saturday, I'll let you experience the joys of children by changing Ryan's diaper. You know you can't pass that up.

To me, it's pretty chilly outside. I guess it's in the upper 50's or low 60's right now. It should be in the low 70's this weekend.
