My wife and I want a digital camera. We have wanted one for a while, but we really couldn't afford a good one, and I didn't want to pay a fortune for a crappy one.
recently the prices have fallen though, and I was promoted (yea me!) so we have a little disposable income this Christmas, so I started looking around.
We really like Cannon's, and the A620 is a 6 mp camera with a x4 zoom (with a x5 digital zoom, but digital zoom sucks so I won't mention it agian in this post). I found a local camera shop that is selling the A640 for the same price as the 5 mp A540....$149.99.
I also found that I like this camera a lot as well. It is a Kodak Z710 7.1 mp camera, and while it is a bit bulky, it has a x10 zoom!
I don't know anyone who has ever shot pictures with one though.
If I use Google Checkout I can get this camera shipped to me for $205, with free shipping. That is the max amount I wanted to spend because I will still have to buy some sort of carrying bag and at least one SD card....either a 512k or a 1G one. That adds probably another $50-75 to the total.
Anyone know about this camera, or have any recommendations?

Woot.com has at least a couple digital cameras a month. There was one during or after the last woot-off that was something insane like 12 megapixels that made me jealous.

Kwea, If you're looking for a 1Gig SD card, go to Buy.com. That one is basically free right now ($50 with a $30 rebate plus $20 off if you use Google Checkout). I know squat about cameras though.

Oh, I say go for it! I actually have a 1 gig SD card in my camera--because I had it for my mp3 player and then I upgraded to 2 gig, and had nowhere to put the old 1 gig card. It's cool to know that I could record a whole concert if I wanted to--albeit in shaky low quality mpeg. But it's an insane amount of memory--I can't imagine filling it with my camera.

I have two 2GB CF cards for my Canon, and I've come close to filling them both -- albeit with video.

I fill my 512 card on a regular basis, but then I take a lot of pictures for school (architecture major) and I hate deleting pictures.

We discussed digital cameras not long ago, and the thread has links to other discussions and many useful links to site with massively useful reviews. DPReview has a LOT of incredibly useful information.
I ended up getting the Nikon S10. 10x optical zoom, but because of its design, it's not a bulky camera. I've had it for a little over a month now and have shot 762 pictures. It takes decent photos that I'm happy with. I'd be much happier with a DSLR, but that's out of the budget for now, but for a compact, this one is very very decent.

I half-fill my 1 GB card in a couple or so days. But I'm crazy.
Seriously, though, those 762 pictures I've taken in the last little over a month take up at most 2 GB - the largest was 2.63 MB and I have it set at the highest quality possible for the camera, which is a 6.0 megapixel camera. Considering that I take way way way more pictures than any normal human, a 1 GB card is enough. Unless you're a fanatic or plan to dump the pictures onto your computer once a year or so.

Hey, Kwea. I got your message--only about a half-hour or so ago. I'm not going to call, though, because everybody's sleeping and I'm pretty tired myself. I'm just checking the fora one last time before turning in. I'll call you tomorrow, if that's okay.
Wednesday sounds good, tentatively speaking. (Did you take the day off just for this, or did it just happen that way?) I could use a fun day.

Just happened this way. I am too busy to plan a day off right before Xmas, but since this was my given day off it seems like a plan, at least for now. Jenni has been sick, but is better now. Unless she relapses we are in!

You DID say Yum!. Don't make me break out the chat log!
I bought a 2G SD card on newegg. It was only $24.99, and had a $5 rebate...along with free 3 day shipping.

Personally, I think having a small camera is more important than a huge amount of megapixels or a powerful zoom. Why? because if the camera doesn't fit in my pocket, I'm not going to take it anywhere, so it won't get used.
Because of that, I bought the Canon Powershot SD30 digital elph. I love it. It takes great pictures, and it is very compact.

Wow! We paid way more than that for a 1 GB card! I'm jealous! A 2 GB card here will cost us about $80.

Well, it depends on the user. I have no problem taking a slightly larger camera with me, although I am less likely to just carry it around. I don't need crazy zoom functions, but they are nice to have. But this camera seemed very intuitive to use when I held it in the store I first saw it at, and I am use to the older style cameras asnyway.
I AM pissed that the order hasn't even been shipped yet. I may cancel the order if it doesn't ship by tomorrow....I payed for faster shipping but it isn't even out the door yet.

Yeah, and that's what we paid a month ago, so we still got hosed. Compared to you guys. And the price was significantly higher two or three months ago, so our prices then were still higher than yours... *sigh* All the way around, it sure does seem like we pay way higher prices for electronics here.
Sorry your camera hasn't even shipped yet. That sucks. And it's terribly unprofessional of them to charge you for faster shipping when they pull a stunt like that.

Is there any way you can cancel the order and buy elsewhere so you have it in time? And barring that, get them to refund the super-fast shipping you paid for that obviously didn't work at all?

That just so bites. And is an excellent reason to send them a very nasty letter detailing all the various reasons you're pissed off at them. I'm sorry. It bites.

This really sucks. It says reschedualed, but it wasn't ever delivered, as my wife was here the entire time for all the days between ordering it and Christmas. It was also never received into the system here in FL.

You think that sucks? Cor ordered a couple of presents from Toys Я Us for the girls on December 10 with guaranteed Christmas delivery. They were to be the biggest of the items under the tree for them. One came and one did not. Oh, well, crap happens, right? So we figured we would just wait for it and give it to the girls whenever it did arrive. Well now it's nearly a month since she ordered it and still nothing, so we decided to track it down. It was also paid for through Google Checkout. We couldn't get Toys Я Us's website to acknowledge the order at all. According to Google Checkout, the order shipped. I called Toys Я Us's corporate number and got an interactive voice response system that finally told me that half the order shipped, as I knew, and the other half was cancelled! Yep, cancel a freaking Christmas present without ever sending an e-mail or anything to inform us! That's nice!!
