I don't get mayflys. As I understand them, the purpose of a mayfly is to post a quick question and then to delete the thread as soon as it's answered so as not to clutter up the main page. And I figure people label it as a mayfly so that when the thread is deleted others won't get upset.
That all makes sense. Except I just did a search on mayflys, and the search function came up with tons of them. I clicked on as many as I could and well over half of them are still in existence. So what's the point?

Sometimes mayfly threads become actual conversations, and when that happens, people generally tend to be reluctant to delete them.

I like mayflys that are "hey so and so, your email bounced" But I don't think mayfly threads about something, anything are of any purpose. If you have a question, post it, then don't delete it.
