I'm looking for some images to put together for my website; I don't have any great expectation of them being professional, but at this point, it beats actually...writing a novel.
Anyway, I came across this image from the Library of Congress, and I thought it was really beautiful. It's so graceful on the one hand-- the woman is poised, fit, powerful, and beautiful. On the other hand, the state of the painting or statue or whatever is heartbreaking.
What public domain images have you come up with?
Incidentally, if anyone comes across an image of a young boy with wings, wearing overalls, carrying a scythe, standing in a wheatfield-- please let me know.

I see those all the time; I have an entire folder of them from when I was designing websites for the Flying Farming Youth Brigade.

Personally, I think any image that shows up on a web page without a disclaimer, or copyright has entered public domain. The author has allowed it to be freely downloaded on anyone's computer.

other than the flying boy farmers is there anything you're looking for help finding? public domain images can cover a pretty broad spectrum here...

Stephan: that attitude is blatantly incorrect, and has been demonstrated so several times in court of law (not to mention that the copyright statutes are clear on the subject, anyways).

Oh, and you might find iStockPhoto useful, Scott.
As for the image you mention, one likely method of obtaining a really cool image like you describe would be to find someone on DeviantArt whose style you like and offer a modest fee for creating the image (or offer an exchange in kind, like naming a character in one of your stories after the person).

Good idea, fugu. I can't afford to pay anything right now (actually, I could probably swing SOMETHING... but since the novel in question hasn't been written yet, I'm loath to commit more than time and sore typing fingers to it).

In that case, definitely consider the in-kind option. DeviantArt is generally a pretty friendly place, I bet some reasonable offer would be accepted by most of the artists. There are a lot of incredibly talented people on the site, too.

Honestly, I wasn't looking JUST for help. I was hoping to have people link to interesting public domain images they've come across.
An explanation of why you find the image interesting would be nice, too.
