I posted this in another thread but I thought maybe I should start a new thread in case any one interested missed the original.
Is there anyone out there who would be interested in making a "Hatrack Forum" collection to give to the American Red Cross to aid the Tsunami victims?
I know that lots of us (including me) have already donated to the relief effort, but as was mentioned in another thread -- there is something special about the things we do as a community. Giving a gift as a community mean something not only about us as individuals but also about us as a community. It would help us to build a culture of generosity. It would mean that generosity is one of the things that define us as a community?
If there is interest, I will be glad to coordinate it just like I did with the First Book donation.

I'm interested. I would feel a lot better doing that as a group sort of thing instead of just an individual donation, cause I feel like I'm also giving something to hatrack

I think this is a great idea, but we won't be participating - we already increased our annual donations to three aid organizations participating in the relief effort, and I really don't think we can give more right now.

If I don't participate here, please don't think I'm stingy. I've already given quite a bit through a collection taken by my church, and also at a local Red Cross.

It looks like there are enough people interested to make this worth while.
Like I said initially, I know that many of us have already given individually and that's great. This effort is solely for those who want to do something extra as a Hatrack community.
We will handle this just like year end gift.
You can either send me the money through paypal and I will pool the funds and make a donation at the end of next week (Jan. 15).
I will make the donation to the American Red Cross International Response Fund link in Honor of the Hatrack River Forum.
You can also make a donation directly at the website given above. If you dedicate it to the Hatrack River Forum and send an e-mail message with the amount to "HatrackForum@yahoo.com" I will add it to the total.
Any amount you donate will be greatly appreciated. No one will think you are stingy if you give anly a couple of dollars or nothing at all because we know that this is only one of many ways that people at hatrack help others. The point of this effort is to allow us to join with our Hatrack friends in doing something good. I believe that help make our community a community of love and strength. If you feel that way, join us. If you don't, we know you are giving in many other ways and won't think any less of you.
BTW, I won't post who gave how much here, only the running total. If you want people to know you contributed, you will have to post it yourself. If you don't want people to know, don't worry -- I may not even be able to connect your e-mail address to your Hatrack handle.

I skipped over the majority of the thread, but I want to donate, I have a paypal account so I guess that's easiest. How do I go about doing that?

We're donating through the kids' school. I'd love to donate through here, but I think it's very important that our kids be involved, and sending a check with them to school is a bit more tangible. Thanks for starting this up, though, Rabbit.

You send your paypal payment to Rabbit's email address in her profile. She's pulling it all together and making a lump donation in the name of Hatrack.

This is fantastic! Hatrack is such a cool community.
Don't wait until the last minute.
Even if you've given somewhere else, think about throwing a couple of dollars into the Hatrack Tsunami relief fund. This is not just about helping the Tsunami victims but about building the kind of community we want Hatrack to be.

quote:ePassporte.com announced today that it will match every dollar its users donate to tsunami relief, up to $25,000. The money goes to the American Red Cross for providing food, shelter, clothing, sanitation, and medicine for victims of the earthquake and tsunami disaster.
ePassporte is a PayPal type of electronic funding service. It offers members free virtual Visa debit cards that can be used for online purchases.
“ePassporte’s aid effort emerged from the desire of our employees to help the victims of the tsunami disaster,” said Esther Martinez, an ePassporte employee.
ePassporte is a relatively small company compared to Paypal. But for the people here who play online poker, ePassporte should be a pretty familiar name.

I'm curious as to why you find it so suprising that I'm a female.
I don't even know. I don't think I ever really thought about it. Some people are seemingly obvious about male vs. female - Katie, Sara, Bob, Tom. Others who have names that are sexless - like mine, for example - you just have no idea about until it comes up in conversation. I was also a little surprised to find out ElJay's a she, so maybe my own little weird brain just tosses things randomly to one side or the other? I dunno.

Such a cool thing, Rabbit. Thanks for heading that up . . . Nathan cleaned me out doing math problems last Thursday to raise money for the relief effort at school . . . I am simply amazed at how much math that boy can do when sufficiently motivated . . .

Rabbit, I thought the check was in the mail, but it was in the car. My husband is mailing it today, so you should get it by Tuesday.

I won't be online until Monday, so I will wait until then to make the donation.
Elizabeth, Don't worry I will include your donation even if I haven't received the check by then. If you can trust me, I can trust you.

Hi folks, We made a group donation for the Tsunami Victims in January, is anyone interested in doing this again for Katrina Victims.
I will be happy to organize it like we did before.
If you want to participate, you can send the money to me through Pay-Pal and I will make the donation to the American Red Cross in honor of the Hatrack River Forum. I will keep a running total of donations and post the totals here.
Or if you'd rather not use me as a middle man, you can donate directly to the Red Cross in honor of Hatrack River. If you send me an e-mail saying how much you donated, I'll add it to the total.
