In the one month I've lived in my new house, I've dropped something on my big toe 3 times now bad enough that it hurt for several days. I think I broke it the first time, but I'm not sure. I can feel a ridge on the bone in that area now where it healed. I can count on one hand the number of times this has happened before we moved into this house.

This past Saturday, I dropped a shelf that only weighed a few pounds, but the corner of the shelf landed right where the nail goes under the skin. That one was the worst. I think it drove the nail into the toe.

Anyway, I think some angry spirit inhabited the land my house is on before it got built. I don't know what kind of sick ghost has a toe fetish, but I need to find some way to appease him.

Don't worry Zan, that's just the Toe Ghost that lives in my house, it must've gone south for the winter. Once it warms up again here in Buffalo (ha) I'm sure it'll return so that I can cause my foot to be black and blue again.

That's great, except for when you are stumbling out of bed to get a diaper. Unless you wear steel toed socks/slippers too, mack.

From the condition of MY toe...

I did some pretty good damage to it in the past week from fencing. By Thursday there was a good deal of blood trapped under the toenail. So, I sterilized the needed and set free the blood (this is always so cool to watch). It felt better. Come Saturday and my competition, by the time I took of my sneakers and put on my sandals, I was limping because of my toe.

Swollen, painful to the touch, much blood underneath the nail. Sterilize the needle again, free blood. Still painful. Still swollen. Still hurts to touch.

Still. Shoes aren't comfortable. [Frown]

You swab the nail with alcohol before you pierce, right?

Any streaking up your toe? Are you worried about infection?

No, I didnt do THAT. [Frown]

I just looked at it again. It's actually less swollen today. No redness, abnormal warmth or streaking.

Though, I'm fencing tonight.

*ducks*

I wonder if I should make a pre-emptive appt with the doc for tomorrow.

Then I'm off of fencing for a week, after tonight. I'd skip because of my toe, but I want to work on stuff I learned from the competition while it's fresh.

Well, you want the nail to be sanitized before you pierce it with the sterilized needle (otherwise the needle can pick up bacteria from the nail as it passes through). So if it streaks or gets funky-smelling, or if you get a fever, I'd be worried about you.

But good luck with the fencing! (I won't try to talk you out of it. [Wink] )

My friends just smack me for it.

So zgator, your toe.

Did you offend your toe? Did you wear some particularly heinous socks? Do your shoes have a certain...odiferous unpleasantness that your toe may be punishing you for?

I go pro-mack all the way. You are in charge, you know.

(I'd worry less if you stayed home and kept it elevated, but that's just me. You know what you need to do better than me. [Smile] )

I can smell Zan's socks from here.

Sara, I have been keeping it elevated all weekend and certainly will tonight. And I won't fence (as in practice at home) for the week I have off because the club will be closed for Thanksgiving. I DO know that not fencing would be best for my toe, but...I want to fence. [Smile]

I know. [Smile]

Like I said, pro-mack all the way. I'll take care of my own worries in my own time. (It's an excuse for an almond scone to sooth my woes.)

Have fun!

*thinks* Maybe zan's Toe Ghost was a former ballerina that never forgave her parents for pushing her into that life. The real reason for the attack on zan's toes is to try and persuade him to end the ballet lessons.

Zan, you can do it. You can give up ballet. It isn't worth the sacrifice of your feet, and your toe ghost loves you enough to let you know that. Haven't you read The Red Shoes? *extends hand* Hand over the ballet slippers. I'll give them back if you ask three times, but I think this is a struggle you need to do on your own.

You know, I really only did ballet because I like the way I look in a tutu. I guess I don't really need the ballet shoes for that. Just don't make me give up the tutu.

Actually, I wasn't wearing shoes when this happened. It was one of those things that it never occurred to me that shoes would be needed. It would really suck if I had to start wearing shoes around the house.

*stab*

My foot must be sliding forward and smashing into the front of my shoe. Only think I can think of.

I did that skiing once. My boot was a little too loose and my toe kept slamming into the front of the boot. It turned black. It fell off.

The nail, not the toe.

Sounds like this has gone toe far. Obviously, something needs to be done to shoe away your arch-nemesis.

Zan, I thought it was funny how you said you could count on one hand the number of times this has happened.

I'll bet you could count that on one foot, too. While you're hopping around holding the other one. [Laugh]

Well, my left big toe got severely traumatized about a week ago, and has been oozing and hurting off and on ever since. However, since I started soaking it in cold water each night, a couple days ago, it's much better.

(No fever, or streaking, and the fluid is clear, so I knew it didn't need medical attention.)

And it's good that it's getting better, because my new shoes came today! [Big Grin]
