Any good thoughts sent this way will be appreciated. We just found out that my ex-husband was in a bad accident on his jobsite today; basically he was crushed by a piece of machinery. He's in the critical care unit with a broken arm and 3 or 4 broken ribs. Some of the arteries that run from his heart up to the collarbone were injured - the doctors have put stints in them to keep them open. His lungs were also very bruised and they're worried about his breathing. As I told my husband, I don't like my ex-husband, but I certainly don't want my kids to lose their daddy. We haven't told them yet. We're hoping in a few days there will be some good news and we'll tell them then.

I went ahead and called the hospital to check on his condition. His nurse was very helpful. She said that in addition to the the injuries I listed in the post above that he also has a fractured clavicle, a crushed artery, and 2 chest tubes. They haven't had to put him on a ventilator, so that's good. She said he's doing "okay." When pressed she said that he's expected to recover.

Gosh, it just keeps coming. It seems like almost everyone I know is going through some sort of crisis or tragedy right now. What is going on with the world?

I just got an update from his mom. She said things are looking really well. He's breathing at 50 percent of his capacity and improving, and they're going to try and get him up to walk today. Umm, I have no clue how! In addition to the other breaks, he also has a broken shoulder blade. Thanks for all the healing thoughts!

I told the kids, stressing the positive parts, of course. There were some tears, but overall they took it really well. Operaetta immediately wanted to call, so we did after explaining that he might not be able to talk. They spoke for a few minutes; he couldn't talk long due to the pain and trouble with breathing. Boy Opera didn't want to talk (I think b/c he knew it would make him more upset). Right now they're making him cards that we'll mail tomorrow. Their dad said hopefully he'll be out of the hospital early next week.

He'll still be in the CCU this weekend, and I don't think that would be a good place for the kids to visit. They'll be with his mom for Thanksgiving, so they should be able to see him then.

edit: I guess he had a really bad night. His chest tube got clogged with a blood clot and one of his lungs filled with blood. However, his mom said they took care of that, gave him some blood and a new pain med and he's a new man today.
