The guy moving in downstairs decided to refinish the floors before moving in. He just varnished them. HIS windows aren't open. Guess where all the fumes are? MY APARTMENT. It's below freezing and I have all my windows wide open and the fan going.

Mack, I'd get out of there... At the very least you should go complain to your super. It might seem like too much. I'm a bit sensitive to things like this... ;_;

More than a bit much. Use of such solvents (like those within the varnish) without proper ventilation of fumes is illegal under health&safety&fire codes, no matter what jurisdiction you live in. If you have a credit card, move into a hotel, then immediately file a suit in small claims court for reimbursement [ February 02, 2004, 08:35 PM: Message edited by: aspectre ]

The guy didn't leave his windows open, which entirely explains it. My landlord isn't the one refinishing--it's a new tenant who hasn't moved in yet. So apparently, said new tenant doesn't care. I mean, if the windows were left open and the taps turned on dripping so the pipes wouldn't freeze, I'd be okay. Instead, this guy has two fans on and the door to the front shared hallway wide open. The ONLY ventilation. My landlord is coming over. I hope he can help to open the windows and stuff.

I'm betting it never even occurred to this guy that all the fumes would migrate into your apartment. I hope the super can get his windows open for you, but I wouldn't hold a grudge against him until you've talked to him. He might just be guilty of not thinking and be really sorry about the whole thing.

I'd just like to note that I do not , in fact, want Mack dead. Who would I have to flip me off when I least deserved to be, then? [ February 04, 2004, 08:36 AM: Message edited by: Godric ]

Landlord came over and opened all the windows downstairs and scolded the new neighbor when he came back in the morning. Apartment is now fume-free.
