I'm on a music search- I am trying to find some good French music- I have cd's from Helene Segara and Edith Piaf, but I'm looking for something a little more upbeat and modern. Any suggestions?

Bienvenue a Hatrack!

The only French music I'm familiar with is on the soundtrack to Amelie. I definitely like that. It reminds me of riding my bike on a lazy Sunday afternoon in the summer.
I'm not sure if that helps you or not, though.

Oh! Merveilleux.

The only French song I know is actually American. But for some reason, the lyrics are all in French, so I like to think that somehow, that counts.

Well, there's always our good friend Johnny Halliday... wait, you said upbeat and modern, that's right
The only ones I've got off the top of my head are Pink Martini and Paris Combo. I don't know if either of them are actually French or just good pretenders, but they're upbeat and fun.

Zebda amuses me!!! JE FAIT TOMBER LA CHEMISE!!! ^__^ Rita Mitsouko also amuses me. I'm easily amused.
Our French teacher makes us listen to French music for class. We heard Edie Piaf, who is really cool! And then Georges Brassens, who I liked a lot! Lately we listened to Maxime Le Forestier, who reminded me of James Taylor and I love James Taylor!! WHOOO! French music!

Paris Combo are French, true. I love Rita Mitsouko, Maxime le Forestier, Alin Souchon, Laurent Voulzy, Stephan Eicher (He's Swiss but sometimes he sings in French) Thomas Fersen, Zebda, Miossec, Yann Tiersen (he's the one who made the soundtrack of Amélie ), Philippe Lafontaine (he's Belgium) and Mauranne (too)... I must forget a lot !

actually, in all seriousness, i was wondering what the defining characteristics of comtemporary french music are and if it would be something i would like.
(plus it was cool to be able to understand, for the most part, annie's posts)

Anna, what do you think of Manau? I thought they were pretty good, but my Breton friends all hate them.

Manau ? Well, it depends on the way you look at it. Its good music to dance and everything, point is they stole the music of a Breton guy (Allan Stivell for those who know) to sample it and it may not sound very honest. Beside that I think a lot of people are attached to Breton music as it is (Tri Yann is a good exemple) and don't like it to de "denatured" by other people.

I am truly impressed with the many suggestions I've received! Thank you all!
I'm wondering... there was a song I heard in high school- I don't remember the name but it was pop/techno music about a spy who fell in love and got betrayed- part of the chorus I can remember is "code rouge" that's it- any help?

Granted, they're Belgian, not French, and they sing in English (laughably bad English, I might add). But I like them. They do a lot of moody, atmospheric, trip-hoppy type stuff.

And, though it's laughably prosaic of me, I do enjoy MC Solaar. How can you not like music that contains the word "ouais?"
And a little more throwaway trashy pop that I can't help but enjoy is Zazie. Do any of the hatraquois/hatraquoise know anything about her? I wonder if she took her name from Zazie dans le metro, which is one of my favorite films ever.

And, Coccinelle, your French is very good. Since it's my maternal language I have no idea, but people say it's difficult to learn as a foreign language.

well, there's a lot of Acadian music (French Canadian) around and a lot of that is upbeat. My favorite is Grand Derangement which is very upbeat most of the time with a lot of Irish-sounding fiddles and such. Tres chouette.
