I know that you hate it when I call you that, but I just can’t help it, dearest Freddy. Knowing that our engagement is secret, I want to shout to the world how dearly I love you and long to sit at your feet at the end of the day. We always want what we cannot have, isn’t that true? Well, I shall wait, just as we agreed, until you have enough money so that we can marry with my parent’s blessing.
The visit here has been interesting in the extreme! Yesterday, a handsome man (no worries to you, dear Freddy, because while he was indeed extremely handsome, he couldn’t compete for my affections, especially in light of his status, which I’m coming to shortly) was most foully murdered right in the room next to me here in the hotel! Poison in his tea, of all things, if you can imagine. I didn’t, of course, know how handsome he was when he died. I hadn’t even met the man. But they had his body on display at the funeral, and I must say he made the best looking corpse I ever saw. He was dressed in a natty tan suit with the most cunning little tie clip I’ve ever seen. I must find out where he got it, so I can see if the artist can make another. It would have looked splendid on you.
You would think that the town had enough excitement what with handsome men being killed in hotels. But the grocer, a tall upright looking man named Mr. Hart, had the poor taste to have a huge bottle of rat poison in one of his cupboards. A sharp eyed lad working in the stock room saw it and called out in a loud voice, “What’s that big vat of poison for, master? I don’t think we got no rat problem, what with your good mouser Whiskers.” This outburst could not have come at a worse time, as the place was filled with customers, all of whom loved Mr. Slaine (the man who died in the room next door). My dressmaker Peggy told me that she saw the angry crowd drag poor Mr. Hart down to that tree I told you about in my last letter. The hanged him alongside Narnia. I must say that Narnia wasn’t looking too well, for all she made a pretty corpse to start. The hot dusty weather hasn’t done anything to preserve her.
Later, it was discovered that the bottle of poison in Mr. Hart’s cupboard was still sealed, so he couldn’t possibly have been the one to murder Mr. Slaine. Another fine Hatrack River citizen dead.
Oh well. I must close this letter, Freddy and be off to a picnic the youngsters at the school are holding. I told the schoolmarm, Annetta, that I would help organize the...
Oh dear! Freddie! As I was finishing this letter to you, the hotel’s errand boy burst into the solarium where I am writing and announced that there has been another murder! I haven’t any details yet, but I understand that it is a Miss Hansen who is dead. Oh dear. I will write more when I can. The only thing I know of her is that she’s the smith’s daughter and known throughout town as one of the most charitable ladies around. A good citizen, and friend of the poor.
I must go, dearest Freddy. I will write again soon!
Sincerely, Your Own Fiancee (in secret) Jenny

Perhaps we need another town meeting. Someone set up a time. Maybe we can puzzle this out a bit better. I've got some suspicions, but after Ryan's innocence, I'd really like to see us nail this down better.

I was saying last game that without clues of some kind the townies were basically screwed.
I vote to lynch me, because since Ryan was a citizen and on the same side we should have formed an unholy alliance to drive out the mafia.

Okay, another town meeting it is. I think that the time we set up last n ight was good, 8:30, EST. If anyone has a better time, then suggest it, but 8:30 works for me.....

*blinks* msquared, how would that help? Policemen are townies too, and if too many more townies die, the mafia wins.

We bungled the first day, and guessed wrong the second -- for the record, Brettly is NOT mafia.
We were so sure that Ryan was mafia, we didn't wait until today when we could ask again. That was a mistake.
However, jehovoid is mafia.
I realize that the mafia will likely kill me tomorrow, and the citizens may or may not believe that I am a policeman. But desperate times call for desperate measures, and if another townie gets lynched, this game will be in dire straits.

Ack, not going to be able to make an 8:30 p.m. town meeting. So let me venture a guess.
Rivka, you have a point that Jehovoid might be amafia member, and I worry that either Fugu is either really clever with crosses and double crosses or he's innocent. Sheesh, I dunno, this is my first game.
I'm going to go with a different tack this time, and pick one of the quieter ones... Damander .

Okay, I have some good info. First, Evie is NOT mafia. I got to be policeman for a day, and checked Evie. Also, there are 5 mafia (it was told to me that the townies get no more mistakes, and with any more the mafia would already have won).
I also know that the police have correctly identified one mafia.
Why am I saying all this? Because it was a one time thing. Killing me gets the mafia no more benefit than killing any other townie (heck, by killing me they validate what I just told you).
Let's knock down some mafia.
I'm willing to take rivka's word that she is a police person (and if we don't, we townies will only be able to win on pure luck). I was not told who the real police are. I vote jehovoid
A note for real police in future games: it is okay to come out as a policeperson once you have some useful information. If the mafia kill you, they validate that information, and if they don't kill you the information is usually persuasive enough on it's own to work. It's a win win situation, whereas if you don't come out most of the townies remain disorganized and are easily picked off by the mafia.

Trouble is, if all the policemen get killed, the mafia wins by default. (It's in the rules jeniwren posted.)

So one day you'll all have to tell me how the version of the game works where there's a Dr. and the citizens get clues somehow. It does seem really one-sided right now as the mafia can all communicate with each other and everyone else is in the dark.

Sounds like jehovoid definitely is mafia. Rivka put it all on the line to finger him. I vote jehovoid.

Last game, the doctor was in many ways the reason why the mafia went down. We (I was mafia last time) tried to kill off the doc, and killed off two other townies -- and then the doc saved the sherriff when we went after him. Add in the keywords, and the mafia crumbled quickly.
Hmm, last time I was mafia, and we got squished like bugs. This time I'm a townie, and not a single mafioso has died yet. :ulp: I'd wonder if I were a jinx, but we're about to take out a mafioso!

It is looking like Jehovoid is a mafioso, so I'm going to change my vote to him. Sheesh, when the guy admits it, what can ya do but get a rope?
But once again, I'm a newbie. Could one of our "police" informants actually be mafia dudes pretending to wear tins stars? What's to prevent anyone from saying they are the police? Just a question, but is it against the rules to say you are a police person when you are actually mafia?

I don't think so. The mafia are supposed to lie about being in the mafia, pretending to be citizens. It's just one more step to impersonating a sheriff

As long as the police get the name of one mafioso and one citizen dies, then the proportions stay the same. Remember the citizens lynch, so there is one less mafia, then the mafia makes their kill.

So here's a question...when someone like jehovoid is definitely going down and everyone's pretty sure he or she is mafia...do the other mafia turn around and vote against him/her just to appear innocent? Do they choose not to vote and risk being conspicuous? What usually happens there?

Well, my little boy is quite sick so I won't be "townmeeting" it tonight, and I'm getting offline for the rest of the evening to take care of him. I'll try to be back tomorrow to place a vote.

Sorry, jeniwren, I didn't save it -- I kept waiting for people to SHOW UP. Sadly, there was really nothing to save.

The game is over in a handful of turns REGARDLESS of whether or not the mafia finds all the policemen. It's merely a matter of the order in which the policemen are killed -- since, after all, it's obvious that pretty much all the townies that are left HAVE to be policemen.
So there's absolutely no reason for the policemen, as soon as they get a successful "tag," to have one of their number (but only one) announce it.
That policeman will almost certainly die next, but they're guaranteed that a mafia member will ALSO die next -- AND if all the policemen don't know each other, a potential threat is ALSO removed. The only way the mafia could beat this strategy, at this point, would be to pretend to be policemen themselves.

Now the police shows up to help us out--after my dear Jennie has already felt the wrath of the mafia They may be too late to save Jennie, but atleast they're here now (until the mafia strikes again).
I don't know about this whole temp policeman thing....it seems pretty fishy to me. But I think I trust rivka (and jehovoid practically admitted he was guilty) so I'm voting jehovoid
*trys to curb the sorrow Jennie's death has caused her so that she can avenge Jennie's death and kick some mafia tail*

Well, Tom has a point. But to avoid losing more cops than absolutely necessary, I will share our thoughts before I get sent to the Ghost Lounge.
(Note, these are our thoughts, based on what we know, but not confirmed yet by jeniwren, since we can only ask one per day, and we asked about jehovoid today.)
We believe that the following players (in no particular order) are mafia: Avadaru, PSITeleport, SirReal, and Sopwith. My cohorts plan to ask about each of them in turn. (I expect to be unable to help with future decisions.)
Also, point of clarification, jeniwren? If all the policemen are killed off, do the mafia automatically win? Your rules post included that as part of the RL rules, but it was unclear whether that carried over to the online game.
