I dont know if I'm losing my mind, but while playing the old Monkey Island 1 i downloaded, i beat it, but what intresested me was the credits. Orson Scott Card's name was listed under 'insult sword fighting insults.' I never knew he did work like that, but I'm not sure if it was true or some type of joke they put in like all the others, anyone know if he did do it?

Absolutely true. He worked on several Lucas Film Games back then. Monkey Island was one of his favorites -- yes he wrote all the insults.

Sum1, the insult swordfighting in the Monkey Island series manifests as a couplet: the original insult, and then a witty rejoinder that beats it. In this case, "I've fought with apes better than you" is the original insult, and "Glad to know you attend your family reunions" is the winning reply. Posts: 37449 | Registered: May 1999

LOL! I just upgraded from a P133 about 3 months ago.
I still have a 486 running 66 mHz in the house, as well as a 386 16 mHz machine. Haven't turned the 386 on in over 3 years, but I still jump on the 486 every so often to play Privateer. It's the only machine I could ever get that game to run on.

I love privateer! My wife's P166mmx is still around for that, and a few other abandonware games...

Ha! I was loving the work of OSC years before I ever read one of his books, and didn't even know it. That really kicks butt, man. Never knew that. Heheh, those were great.

I enjoyed the overall feel of the game. The characters were the most believable. I actually cared about them... which was rare, at the time, for computer games. So, while reading the credits after beating the game(something you should always do in any LucasArts game), I found that the dialogue was authored by OSC. I had to find a book. However, it took my 4th time through the game (in a fit of nostagia) to actually pick a book up.
I've been hooked since.

Just dredging this thread up again (after reading Ender's Game in HSC English last year, then completing SoMI again and realising who wrote the insults)
So, the point. How did OSC come up the with now iconic "You fight like a dairy farmer" -> "How appropriate. You fight like a cow" insult?

Eep, can't get Privateer for love nor money but Privateer 2 is awesome - allstar cast and annoyingly addictive, although now i've upgraded my computer it doesn't work.
Oh, and like they say if you wait long enough it will come back. Must've made this post a year ago meself... Monkey Island rules, like Monty Python but American. Oh and please make my day Geoff by telling me y'all worked on Sam and Max.
