My name is Lorcan Brennan. I live in the west of Ireland in Galway, or I was living in Galway. Recently my Ma sent me to live with Granda Derry in Rathleacloon. She says that I cause trouble and she can't look after me while Sorcha, my sister, is in Hospital. She might be right. Its just that I see things. Real things that other people pretend aren't there and Ma doesn't like this. Granda Derry revealed the other evening that can see things too, and he knows all about the creatures and gods of Ireland. I asked him about my Da, if Da was like us, but he wont talk about it. He wont talk about the accident or anything. So I am on a quest. I am going to find out about my Da and about the accident and why no one will talk about it.

I suppose I see what you could call the mythical creatures of Ireland. Though, they are no more mythical then yourself. Last week I saw a Merrow, I suppose you Americans would call it a mermaid. Though our stories of such creatures are different. My Granda told me that they have to wear special red caps to be able to breath under the water. I've also seen fairies, wee men with wrinkled faces. I've yet to speak with one, though. Galway is grand place, but I prefer Rathleacloon to the city.

DianaMccly, a note, if I may.
If Lorcan truly believes that other people also see what she sees, then she would not talk about what she sees using "suppose."
She sees them, and she doesn't understand why everyone else pretends not to see them, so she should talk about what she sees as if others already know. Why won't they admit it?

Robert Nowall: Well they're a bit difficult to catch. I tried once, but Ma caught me and now I am not allowed to leave the yard. I believe my Granda talks to them so maybe he'll introduce me.
Kathleen: your right he would be more certain. I do have one concern though... Lorcan is a boy (12 years old). What gave you the impression he was a girl? Maybe your getting too much of me and not enough of him in his responses(Drat).

Interesting, Diana. I reread your post and I didn't see anything that clued me in to Lorcan being male.
Perhaps if he had said something like "She says that she can't be looking after a trouble-making boy while Sorcha, my sister, is in Hospital." that would have helped.
("be looking after" sounds a tad more Irish, to me, anyway), by the way

It's the name...kinda the equivalent of "Lawrence," but not related to it in an etymological way. (Yes, I looked it up on Wikipedia.)

I'd have to agree with Kathleen on the sex of Lorcan. Reading a story, if the name is a unisex name, one usually assumes the main character is the same sex as the writer. It should be pointed out right away if there can be any doubt in the reader's mind.
