Home. There’s no place like it. We find it, build it, break it, redecorate it, lose it, leave it, level it, come back to it, and take it. We make home plates, home pages, home rows, and home planets. Whether we love it, hate it, or feel some other way, we’re rarely indifferent to it, because home is meaningful, wherever or whatever it is.
Your challenge: In at least 1,000 but no more than 5,000 words, write a creative, compelling, and well-crafted story that clearly uses the premise of “HOME.” If you have questions, ask us at Questions@OnThePremises.com.
Deadline: 11:59 PM Eastern Time, Saturday, January 28, 2012.
I thought the last OTP excahnage group went well (if you don't include the fact no one won). I have a story already in mind. I had it sold months ago but the anthology cancelled and all rights have reverted back to me. It could use a couple of tweaks for it to fit the premise better but it's pretty much ready to go.
So would anyone like to join this group? As in the WotF group, attach your name to the list.
I was thinking I might use the one you read earlier in the WOTF process as it seems to fit. I have another about done for WOTF round two.

I might participate. I like the way you ran this, Frank. I have a story idea, but I'm not real sure I'll be able to get to it by the deadline.

Saw a bumper sticker once, it read: There's no place like 168.192.1.1
Saw another one that read: Jesus saves - and takes no damage.
I'm in - if I can think of an idea...

I received their Newsletter and thought about posting this myself.
I wouldn't mind entering their contest again but no new stories until after Nov. Except for one I was in the middle of... might be a good one for Q2. But I have time after Dec 1.
And I need to check to see if I have a Home story already. Seems like I should have a couple but we shall see. If they are older stories they will need work... of various types.

Thought of an idea. Is it a winner? Who knows. Have to write it and submit it...

Count me in, please. Don't have a story, but I have had a home for most of my life, so something should come to me.

Frank, Will you create an "openings" thread for 16? It seemed the 15 one fizzled. Or was it meant only to be a place to post them? I didn't see any crits.
I'm in and will crit the 13s differently than the whole story. They are super important, so should be scrutinized differently.
Plus, we can bang out a 13 quickly for our stories and get important feedback on them fairly soon as opposed to finishing a draft and waiting for a crit.
Do you think OTP would have a problem with us publicly helping each other?

The 13 line openings ended up being dudes. I think an exchange works well enough.
Plenty of time everyone. I may have mine ready soon though. Should I wait to send it out?
Posted by axeminister (Member # 8991) on :
Dudes?
I'm a dude...
Send when ready. I'd rather have it and not be able to review it, then be able to review it and not have it.

At least I'm not the only one to react to dudes.

I'm in OTP 16. I can't see how OTP would possibly object.

You mean the plural for dud isn't spelled with an 'es'? What about words like bar, car, had, and fat?
This may explain why I received a cold response from an editor when I complimented him on his beret, insisting his head was capable of filling plenty of hates even if the one he wore now was best suited for the previous century.
In the words of the Texas governor, "Oops".
I think I'm ready to send mine out. I'll likely send it out this afternoon. Any objections?
Posted by axeminister (Member # 8991) on :
None. Fire at Will. Just don't miss, or Will will be pissed you're firing at him.
I sent OliverBuckram back a crit. I will be working on yours tonight sheena.
Things are chugging along...
Posted by axeminister (Member # 8991) on :
Sent mine to Shimmy and Snapps.
Since we have oodles of time, I'm going to stagger my story. Others will get subsequent drafts.
Oodles.
Anthony Hopkins, right?
That word is linked to him permanently.

Go Snapper!
Received your crit. I especially appreciate the science fact stuff. I don't want to get it wrong, even given the situation my MC is in.

Instead of nebula gas and star explosions, meteor pellets and a solar flare would work.

Nevermind.

Yeah. What Ute said.

I can now do my story if there is still anyone also here who hasn't sent in their story and/or can do crits. And if I can recall what story I wanted to send them.
Posted by LDWriter2 (Member # 9148) on :
Hmm, I have half a dozen stories about going home.
Posted by snapper (Member # 7299) on :
Just make sure they're within the word count, Louis.
You can send me it when its done.
Posted by LDWriter2 (Member # 9148) on :
Yeah, I already checked the word count. One story I wanted to use is a thousand words over. It involved someone fighting for his new home and realizing that it was home. And by home I don't mean the house he lived in but the island he moved to.

Okay, forgot about this contest until now. Looks like I still have a week or two to send something. Anyone still open to critting a story for me? 1,200 plus words. It's a simple story and probably needs lots of help since I wrote it.
Posted by snapper (Member # 7299) on :
Sure. Send away!
OTP posted on their facebook that they have received 134 entries so far.
Posted by LDWriter2 (Member # 9148) on :
I will send it probably tomorrow night.
Thanks.

Today is the deadline for this contest.

Right...
Posted by LDWriter2 (Member # 9148) on :
Drat, After snapper's great crit and my work on it, I missed the deadline. Part of that was that I was out of town on a long weekend date with my wife since Friday, part of it was not keeping up with the date. Last week someone said it was the 24th and I said What! So Soon?
But I can still send it out to somewhere else and snapper's crit will more than likely make it better.
Posted by OliverBuckram (Member # 9655) on :
Did you win? They claim they'll say on Wednesday. In the meantime, see if your story fits the parameters of the near misses described cryptically here:
None of those are mine, but I'd rather have one be mine than receive a flat reject. Ha!
I assume they'll announce winners and rejects around the same time through submishmash. Mine still says - in progress - which is what I'm assuming all 237 say.

Posted by snapper (Member # 7299) on :
That is cool. None are mine, though. Expect a mass email for all the stories at once.
Good luck everyone!
Posted by Utahute72 (Member # 9057) on :
Well I just got my, "Thanks for playing" e-mail. And no, none of the ones they described are mine.
Posted by axeminister (Member # 8991) on :
I'm out too.
Posted by snapper (Member # 7299) on :
Got the same reject. I did send in for a crit and I'm willing to share with whomever is interested in seeing what it says.
Posted by Utahute72 (Member # 9057) on :
Please do snapper, I thought yours was pretty good, so I'd like to know what they found wrong. Trying to figure out what these guys are looking for.
Posted by wirelesslibrarian (Member # 9513) on :
I got the thanks but no thanks email too. Didn't ask for the crit, still in my pouting phase. I would love to see what they say about yours, though, Snaps.
Posted by snapper (Member # 7299) on :
Will do. If anyone else would like a viewing of my review, let me know. They said I am 4th in line at the moment
Posted by snapper (Member # 7299) on :
