I thought I'd mention here that the National Novel Writing Month site has been relaunched and that means sign ups for the 2012 NaNoWriMo are open. It seemed like a good idea to have a thread for this year's, where people can talk about it, find buddies or ask questions.

Their website is here, and you can sign up or look for information about it for those who've never done it before.

I did NaNo myself for the first time last year and really enjoyed the experience. It's not necessarily for everyone, but it's definitely for me. 50k in 30 days sounds like a lot, but it's not that bad if you keep at it. Also, having friends or writing buddies who are doing it, who can give you a pep talk when you need it also helps. I'm going to be doing it with a friend of mine who has never written a novel before but wanted to try both a novel and NaNo, since she hears me talk about it a lot. I think we'll have fun.

As I did last year, I'll be blogging my way through the experience, though that's definitely not necessary.

So, how about we start with a sound off of who's planning to participate this year from Hatrack?

Also, as I said, if you've got questions about it, this would be a good place for them. Those of use who have been through it at least once can try to answer.

I might do it this year. I have a specific novel in mind. If I can get the detailed outline finished by Nov. 1, I will probably go for it.

I did it in 2009 and was successful. But this time I'll have a better plan.

I haven't made up my mind on this. I've done it and won three times, but have only one actual completed novel out of it. Basically, I find novels very scary. I'm so much more comfortable in short form.

Which is probably a sign I should do it, hm?

Well, challenging oneself is a good way to grow. I know I was intimidated the first time I did NaNo, but I'm glad I did.

Before I forget to mention it, if anyone else is doing NaNo, my handle over there is the same as here, Heresy, if you want to add as a writing buddy.

Looks like I will be doing it again. I had decided not to because of the time and effort it takes to do it but suddenly I have three ideas.

One deals with the adventure of a Leprechaun and gnomes in the modern world, even though most of their adventures would be in the wild.

Second deals with a contemporary non-Christmas Santa Claus adventure...more adult-ish even though that doesn't mean he chases girls and smokes anything,

Third one is...third one is...third one is...Rats can't think of it right now.

It might have been a UF tale set in the 1930s staring a boy of twelve or so who just figured out he can do things other people can't but I don't think that one was for NaNo.

Oh well, I might think of it later.

Yeah I'll give it a try this year. I'm quite busy with work and school but I'm in serious need of some re-creation. I'm getting burned out. I'm Pyre Dynasty over there too. Even though I still haven't finished my first try from years ago. (Mainly because I hit a point where I decided I really should do more research on Victorian England before writing more.)

I think I'll combine some of my uploading musings into a novel. Either that or rewrite the novel I wrote as a teenager. Or I could do some Zombie-POV. Perhaps I'm finally ready to write The Grid. (Nah, I'm not sure I'll ever be ready to push that button. (Okay I really need to sleep I just told an inside joke about a novel that only exists inside my head.))

Dang guys, you got me excited, and I've got a lot of essays in the mix. (Perhaps I'll cheat and insert them in the middle and call it post-modernism.)

I've done it for 5 years, and I'm on the fence this year. I haven't had any brilliant ideas knocking down my door, and I do have 4 (count them...) previous Nanowrimo manuscripts in need of revising.

My current thought is to find the most promising of those old manuscripts and spend as much time editing it as I would normally spend writing a new one. I'm hoping that I can still get in on the cameraderie of Nanowrimo though, since I live for it from one year to the next. I've got no idea how that idea might be received though. What are your thoughts?

(On the other hand, I'm still open to that great idea bowling me over.)

I just signed up for this year. Novels are more my style but am intimidated slightly of writing one in only a month. But it's a lot more than I did last year so that's something.

Just a couple more weeks until NaNo begins. Is everyone doing whatever preparation they need, even if it's just hyperventilating or screaming into a pillow?

I wish you all luck. I've done it for three years in a row, but I've already got my current WIP at 6,500 words, so I want to finish that. However, I'll be cranking along with you all.

Yay! I have been on hiatus from the Treehouse as well, but NaNoWriMo is on my calendar! I am even planning on helping my 8yr daughter write a book during it as well. Wish me luck! I managed to get 12k last year only giving it an honest week's effort so I know I can do it this year. And I have a better story outline to go with. I am LeetahWest there as well [Big Grin]

I finished the projects that I thought I would be working on in November, so I've got my decks cleared for a fourth NaNo attempt. I've made the 50,000 words each time, so my goal this year is to finish the novel I just started. I'm only 6,500 words in and won't be counting those, so I'm shooting for 113,000 words in 30 days. It's a stretch, but I've popped over the 100K mark twice so far.

I'm on as Owasm and I know that I've already got Genevive on my buddy list from last year.

Posted by genevive42 (Member # 8714) on :

I plan to hit the 50k for NaNo, but I'm going to continue the pace until my novel is finished. I expect it to be in the 75-80k range so I'll be writing a bit into December. I'd love to pull off what Owasm is planning, but I don't know that that's within my typing ability. [Wink]

Posted by walexander (Member # 9151) on :

Well, turned the burner on and set the pot to boil. Logged on to NNWM today and did the wink/nod that I'm in again. I've been at this since 2004 and never finish because i try not to prep first and always start from scratch Nov. 1st but usually get distracted or forced to work (LOL) that darn thing of making money to pay bill's is always getting in the way of my fame and fortune! Rats! [Smile]

I have a feeling I'm going to make it this year. Always a gosh darn devils temptation to start early or use old material to get a jump on day 1 but whats the point I'd only be cheating myself. Well, good luck to everyone. See you at the finish line. [Wink]

@wireless

My primary trick is to start with an outline of some kind so you can concentrate on putting words to paper and less time thinking of what to write next. I've always had some kind of an outline ready to guide the story. It's nice to figure out a little worldbuilding as well, if you need it.

You've got a couple of days, use them wisely. [Smile]

Just an opinion,

I realize everyone approaches nnwm with there own aspiration/goals on what they gain from the contest, but forgive me if I'm wrong but I thought the whole original concept of NNWM was to let go of the all the prep, and it's function was to just go for it day one. If you do prep whats the difference between the contest and our everyday writing. I thought the original idea was not to worry about if you're going to write the next great novel, but just try to flex your writing muscles in a non stop fashion without any rewrite. To let your imagination flow and let it take you where it will, and keep going till the end of story, 50k or whatever you can achieve, and just be proud with that and leave the worry and stress of if its professional or 50k is reached at the door.

I thought the whole point was to challenge the average writer to try and achieve a difficult level of word count on one idea/one manuscript in this question - Can you in one month create one concept, one idea and reach 50k plus words by the end or at least that's what I thought its original idea was. Maybe it has become just another form of publicity/networking now. No harm in that i guess. Like I said I guess we all take from it our own personal goals. As long as you enjoy it and challenge yourself should be all that matters.

Please remember this is just an opinion. No need to get out the torches. Remember I have yet to achieve the 50k award so what ever you do don't follow my advice [Wink]

I always saw it as a way to let go your inner editor. That doesn't mean you shouldn't have a plan. Heck, if you want to write 10-5k short stories I still think that's valid. NaNo is entirely what you make of it. Pantsers will approach it differently than outliners. Just have fun and challenge yourself.

The first time I did it just to prove I could. This time I'm going in with serious intent to finish a manuscript that I will rework and complete in the spring. No matter what happens, we will all learn something.

Also, just an opinion.

Posted by wirelesslibrarian (Member # 9513) on :

I'm a newbie, so I obviously don't have a clue. Having some sort of plan does seem wise, though, and I don't think that THINKING about writing something qualifies as writing it. Heck, if that were true, I'd have shelves full of finished novels. I've never been an outliner, though. Guess that makes me a pantser, but I think I'm going to try and get something organized before I start typing away on Thursday. Thanks for the input!

Posted by genevive42 (Member # 8714) on :

I used to be a pantser, now I'm a moderate outliner. I have the main points and the end figured out. I have a description of the story. And I know what my opening scene is. Part of me wanted to do a chapter and scene outline, but I didn't get to it in time. I've never used one before, I guess why start now?

Posted by Owasm (Member # 8501) on :

Of my three novels written for NaNo, I've self-pubbed two of them. So for me it's more than just writing for fun, but writing to get something useful. However, the intent of NaNo, as has been said is to break down writing barriers so that you get enough words down on paper enough to justify it as a novel.

You get what you wish to put into it and that's the beauty of NaNo. Get your 50,000 words any way you wish. It's just that, for me, I like to spend my hours doing something useful, but that's because I can and I write fast. NaNo is a great way to push yourself that you just can't do on your own.

Posted by Heresy (Member # 1629) on :

To me, it's partly about the idea of letting go of the inner editor and also trying to develop the habit of writing every day. Both have been incredibly successful.

I approach NaNo from the idea that I'm only competing with myself. The first time I did this, I wanted to hit 50k, and more, I wanted, for the first time ever, to finish a novel. I did that. It became a habit that I've spent the last year continuing.

I find that, if I don't have an outline, I get lost in the middle and eventually grind to a halt without finishing, so to try to pants my way through NaNo would be setting myself up for failure, and I don't think that's valuable. Using NaNo as a kick in the butt, to get myself really writing? That's the value for me.

That said, I do agree with those who are saying that it's what you put into it. I'd also add that it can be whatever you hope to get out of it. If you want to try a different process, do so. If you want to see what you come up with when you have no prior expectations, go for it. Those, and other approaches to NaNo, are all great as long as you're writing. I think that's the one important part, to write, to let the words loose.

-Heresy

For me Nano is about words not the concept. About keyboard jockeying. Preparation beforehand is a survival strategy. I think it still fits with the spirit of freedom and pantsing by the fly of your seat. Just because I have a destination in mind doesn't stop me from getting there while leaving the inner editor in the dust.

Of course, yesterday my computer decided to crap out. Don't think there's data loss, but I have to take it to the shop. Fortunately, I have a netbook. Might be good to get out of the apartment and go more mobile than usual.

Finished a prologue today, Started it in morning break, went back at lunch and redid parts--added description and some human senses and made what was the second paragraph into the last paragraph.

1030 words.

Would have been more but my wife needed some computer time for her crafts and I needed to finish a crit.

A little over 1k today. Pretty good considering I was just working on it during breaks. I've been a little creepier than I meant the piece to be because I've been reading Space Eldrich and it's kinda affected my mind. I've found that a little bit of infodump can keep my fingers moving.

There comes a time every November when I break down and ugly cry from taking on too much. That day for me this year was Nov. 1st.

Not a good sign.

Posted by LeetahWest (Member # 9402) on :

I hear ya shimiqua! I am right there with ya! I just realized that the boutique I was supposed to be hosting in my less than 1k sqft upstairs of my home has 14 vendors. That is not going to fit in my house. I have spent the last two days figuring out logistics and trying to find a venue for rent!

I didn't hit my word quota for yesterday or today, but I got really close and I just have to pat myself on the back for even writing while I am this crazy busy. But I am not going to use this as an excuse to stop writing. I will meet the 50k goal.

Signing out tonight with 2765 words, prologue, chapter 1 and part of chapter 2.

Hersey, I wish I could write as much as you! 9686 seriously!? You are my inspiration.

*blush* Thanks, Leetah, but honestly, keep in mind I don't have nearly as much going on in my life as you do. I've been watching your progress and seriously cheering. You're right to pat yourself on the back for keeping going, for getting some in every day. I know it can be hard, but even that much can be a total victory. [Smile]

Ha! Two days in I've changed my mind. I'm going to continue on the project, but not at NaNo pace. This is a very challenging character and I'm not going to be able to get into her head if I'm worried about word count. I know how I need to work and NaNo isn't it.

NaNo did give me a kick in the pants though, and that's a good thing.

Have fun everyone!

20,678. Not much of a life, do I have. My goal isn't 50K, though. It's 120K for November, so I still have a long slog ahead.

Hey, I did some good work today. Almost done with chapter one with probably around 5900 to 6200 words in it. I did a shorter prologue also.

Probably still behind and I don't know what I will be working on at work. Chapter two maybe or and upcoming battle scene or ? We shall see.

Posted by LeetahWest (Member # 9402) on :

I added some good meat to my chapter 2 today and started chapter 3. (trying to stay around 2500 per chapter, some are still thin at the moment, but that will give me places to go back and plump up if I run out of steam in the story direction) I am shy 666 words of the minimum goal at this point, but all things considered I am feeling pretty good about it.

Posted by rabirch (Member # 9832) on :

I'm not even putting in chapters at all. I've got scene break marks, and I figure I'll go back through when I'm done and organize them into chapters.

I'm planning to put them into Scrivener eventually so I can move things around with the nifty little notecards if I want to, I just don't want to get distracted by messing with new software while I'm supposed to be writing.

Anything can distract me. It's a serious issue.

Posted by Owasm (Member # 8501) on :

I hit 30,000 words. I'm doing something new with this one, writing it chapter by chapter, but also alternating POVs with my two main characters, nearly chapter by chapter. I've ripped my outline to shreds as the story has just taken off and I'm barely hanging on.

Usually I write like RABirch does, with scene breaks and then I'll slip in the chapters as they naturally fall in the story.

Argh!

Started with 20 lines for opener of chapter 1, but then skipped to chapter 2.

That's what happens when you haven't fully developed the characters but need to get to the start of the conflict and get the story arch rolling. I'll get back to chapter 1 with the mood and setting and character introductions when I get to know the characters better.

I had a nice basic outline written for about 25 chapters, and a detailed outline written for the first 6 chapters. But like Owasm, that has all kinda gone out the window as my ideas cultivate. The bones of the story are still there, you know, the beginning and the end, but everything in between is being meddled with. I am having a hard time with the writing because the only chance I have to write is after 10:00pm and I start dozing by midnight. I wish this was easier. Next year I want a completely unscheduled November so I can write my guts out like I want to without being distracted and worried by 100 other things. Arg. Now that I have wasted precious time complaining about the time I don't have, I better write something!

Doing a bit better, over the 11,000 word mark.

Probably still behind--I'll find out in a few minutes--but at least I seem to be doing over 2,000 words a day the last two days and should be close to that tomorrow.

Came back to say according to their new chart I am only one day behind now...predicted finish day is Dec 1 [Smile]

That chart is amazing and well done.

Owasm, that is fantastic! I haven't had a chance to write the last couple of days. I am editing a story for a friend and doing illustrations as well. The editing has taken priority over everything else. Once that is done (hopefully today) then I will be able to get back to writing. I am now 6k words behind the minimum target goal, but I will catch up. I am determined to do this thing, regardless of whatever else is happening in my life.

My NaNo Novel is coming along. Not quite as quick as I thought but still I'm close to if not over where I should be.

But I should have said this last time but Amazing Owasm. Someone else on NaNo forum I'm on is close to fifty but you beat even him.

I may still get mine significantly over 50,000 but not even close to what you're going for.

Had a moment when I had to think of some more Holiday myths, I have Santa Claus, Peter Rabbit, may have Mother Nature and the tooth fairy but I wanted a couple more.

Well, I came up with someone that is for Veterans Day and Uncle Sam.

I hit 77K this evening and pretty much finished the story. I have a denouement that I'll likely finish tomorrow. I had a 7K word headstart that I didn't count for NaNo, so I figure the novel will clock out at about 85K before I jump into rewrites.

UPDATE: 11/12 -- Finished. 81K of NaNo words and nearly 88K of total words.

Never written before but I am going to jump into this with both feet and I will need help along the way for sure!! Its about time I spend some time doing something I have wanted to do for years now.

I am about 1/2 way behind already because I only joined today but with the next few days off I should be able to grind out a few thousand words.

Welcome to the party, zwicker! You've got the right spirit, jumping in and getting started. [Smile] It's never too late for that. Well, maybe on December 1st, but then you can have December WriMo. [Big Grin]

well, well Heresy...good going to you too.

And Prye you can still do it. You have time but even six thousand words a week will still be good.

zwicker...welcome to the club and sounds like you're right on schedule.

I posted 26,000 words tonight over half way goodie. [Big Grin]

Anyway...I just found out one of my favorite published writers is doing NaNo. I could have been one of her writing buddies if I had known. She doesn't expect to do 50,000 words but she wants to do the middle of her next book in Nov.

Still going strong. But I will slow down tomorrow and Sunday. Got four crits to do. Two quick short ones and two longer more in-depth ones. The last two I will probably just start. And I need to read each story first.

Slight problem though:
I need a good reason for a group of people--of various types--for attacking my MC's friends. So far, even though he's been caught at the wrong time and place no one is after him specifically. But I'm not sure why the other attacks. This is well organized and probably taken years to plan but...why? I want to try think of a reason that is different. I know of a couple of the usual reasons but they are all cliche-ish or over used.

Mistaken Identity? Racism? Some kind of sick cult ritual? Soccer hooligans? Zombie delusions? Drugs? Mind control? People trained as attack dogs? Random gang violence? People are just jerks sometimes? A deep seated discomfort in the populace that just happens to come to a head at that moment? Sometimes things just happen without any explanation? (okay that one gets filed under cop out.)

Yeah those probably fit into the realm of cliche, but I really enjoy just spouting things out.

My MC's friends are a loose based group that fights people and animals from what I call the Otherworld(another cliche name that I need to change. Fairy and Fea--or far--are used a lot. Never-never has been taken already). That includes all the mythical animals, Elves, Fairies, and related peoples. Suddenly military units and Elven warrior groups are attacking people in this loose based group. It's quite possible they don't about my MC, since he tries to keep to the background and only joins with the others a few months out of the year. He's too busy the rest of the year.

The attackers are also fighting with a more organized group called the Protecters(yet another cliche but it might fit).

Posted by LDWriter2 (Member # 9148) on :

I also need another word for Fea. or Fairy...Never Never is taken. I use Otherworld at the moment but that's cliche and used. At the bookstore I saw two different books that used Otherworld or OtherWorld. I really need a new one. I kinda would like something with Oz in it but that could be problematic.

Upped my word count by over 2,100. Didn't want to stop especially with my MC just being attacked by a Troll with a huge battle-ax. Didn't quite hit 36,000 though. But its late.

I think at least some of this writing is my best, including the spooky scene that finishes with the Troll battle. I haven't decided for sure yet but I may have come up with a reason for the attacks. The idea is not all together original but it's not been used a lot either....I think.

Of course I add, I've thought some of my previous writing has been my best but four to ten critiquers-depending on the story-disagree. As do every editor I sent those stories to.

Something I meant to say at the beginning but finally getting around to it--nice prograstination activity too--today.

Three years ago when I did this I made a new file for each day of writing. At the end I had to put them all together to turn it in and later to start revising it. When I sent one chapter to someone they found a missing space. I had fogotten to add one day’s file. I thought I was being careful and I thought I read through it.

Last year I decided not to do that and add a --- at the beginning of each new day’s writing. When I would go back to add something to a previous day’s writing I counted how many words and added them to the --- for the new day’s writing. thus 7---or 123---. I would delete the previous days line each new day even though when I started the revision process I discovered I skipped a day here and there. To count a day’s writing I scrolled back up until I found the --- and highlighted from all the new stuff.

This year I’m doing the same. I debated going back to the original method but decided it was too bulky so I’m doing the lines again. That can be a pain when I have to go back five plus pages to find it so I can count the new stuff. Sometimes I miss it and have to go back and try again. I stop and read sentences along the way to see if I wrote that one today or the day before but sometimes it’s hard to recall when I wrote something.

I may have tried spaces inbetween the old stuff and new writing the first time I did NaNo years ago but that took time to find the spaces and to join the two parts and if I recall correctly I missed some of those too.

Tonight I had to leave my MC in a cliffhanger, I don't know the answer to.

Parts of this book has been like reading one...I didn't know where it was heading until I got there.

LDWriter2, why not take an existing word that is synonymous with Faiery and 'twist' it. In Tim Burton's movie, Alice in Wonderland, Epsilom tells Alice the she used to call it Wonderland when it's real name was 'Underland'.

In my story, one of my main characters is a shape-shifter. The inspiration for her character comes from the Valkyrie, but her 'people' are called the Way-el-Kree. And, yes, the similarity is intentional.

Phil.

Thanks for the advice.

I will need to think about it. I think that is basically what Jim Butcher did with Never Never.

B'oz for OZ...don't think so but will think on it. See if I can come with something I like.

And I'm just a tad under 40,000 words tonight in fact if I had known I was this close I would have written 14 more words tonight.

And I would have had it and more if I hadn't had to revamp a story I sent out tonight.

Four out today, one needed some work when I ran it through my proofreader.

One more thing:

Oh yes, I have an idea of why the bad guys are attacking everyone...better devlop it I only have one week to be sure of the reason.

And for some reason I want to get this novel up in the traditional way. Last year's is an Indie book maybe...the year before is for sure. A Non NaNo Novel (Say that one five times real fast) is going up the Indie way if I ever get it back from the reviewers.

Guh, this is the second time I switched to first person. The last time wasn't that many paragraphs this time it might be a page and a half.

At least this time I had a reason....I'm finally reading Jim Butcher's "Ghost Story" in-between writing. All I will say about it is this could be his best writing yet and that along with it being FP places it in my mind when I start writing.

Finished Chapter five tonight. But my MC is still being chased by Fairy Wolves in chapter six.

Not sure about Ch 7 though. Have to see what I come up with over night. It might be the last one. Where the bad guys are revealed, people rescued, and my MC returns to his day job. I do have some long chapters most are okay but I think I will be splitting up Ch 5. One would be around 1500 to 3000 words but that's okay even if all of my other chapters are 5,000 to 8,500.

I have three or four mini epilogues planned, or I might make that three or four chapters in one. That will add to my word count.

Don't forget, everybody, that validation is now open for those who have reached their 50k (or exceeded). For those who haven't, there's still time to get there [Smile]

Yeah, a few have. I think two from here and at least two on the NaNo forum I'm a part of.

Posted by LDWriter2 (Member # 9148) on :

Well, well the status page says I can finish tomorrow but I doubt I will quite get that last 2,666 words. Especially with that number. [Smile]

Anyway, 2,200 maybe. but it's going to be close because I have to finish it. I can get the words by Wednesday but not sure about the conclusion. I did want at least 5,500 but I would have to do that amount Thursday. We shall see, my MC is about to fight the bad guy who will tell him what this was all about. I know the ending... most of it but it's going to be rushed.

Posted by LDWriter2 (Member # 9148) on :

Well, well I did it.

Even though I seem to be the only one reporting right now.

But I mean I got over 50,000 but I still need to quickly finish two scenes before I feed my novel to their computer for a double check. Well I guess I don't really have to but a novel does need an ending to be complete and I want both scenes at least done even if I have to go back and add some to really clarify things.

Don't think it will be over 55,000 as I hoped but still over. And hey I thought Thursday was the 30th but the Status page said I had two days, wow when I send it in tomorrow night I will be two days early not one.

I finished my novel late last night, then collapsed, so now seems good for reporting. Still They Watch is complete (capping my Necromantic trilogy) at 107,615 words. That makes it officially the longest first draft I've ever written.

And, because I'm a glutton for punishment, now I'm going to start working on the outline of book 1 of my next project. That main character has been trying to distract me all month anyway.

Okay, its verified at 51,387 words.

Writer's Digest has a webinar on how to end a novel. I can say not like I did, even though it's only the last paragraph or so that is really bad. Some of the last scene needs some work but it's only that last little bit that was rushed too much.... or so I think.

Oops that is a worksheet not a webinar. Free worksheet
No epilogues yet and they will add estimated 2,000 to 6,000 words plus I need to go back and add a few sentences on two things I added toward the end, all will add words but I'm not sure about getting it to 80,000 plus. For some reason I want this one to be traditionally published. So I may do a revising month if they do one.

I also need a better Title "His Other Job" may not cut it even though it might. It's close.

Ah December 1st. The beginning of the Post-NaNo era.

To everyone who reached 50k, congratulations.

To everyone who chipped away at the task yet didn't get to 50k, congratulations. Yes, you too. You wrote. You have more words than you did. That is victory, always.

If you didn't finish your novel, whether you reached the 50k or not, keep going (though a saner pace may prevail). Finish. That's the most important thing. Not how many words you wrote or didn't, not how long it took you. Finishing is what matters, because people want to read finished stories. You can't edit what you didn't finish either. So go on, sit down. Even though it's December 1st, sit down and type away. Finish that story, see it through to the end, whether that takes December or even beyond. Finish the stories you start. Cross that line at the end, write those most fabulous words, "The End." You'll be glad you did.

Happy December 1st everyone.

-Julie

I said pretty much the same thing on the Hatrack NaNo forum even though probably only a couple of people read it.

So even though November is over and your didn't finish, go for it, it would still be good to write 'till the end.

I'm working on a couple of epilogues for my novel. I wanted to make sure I finished so I sent it in to be counted before I did those. I figure they--yes more than one--will add to the word count but probably only 4,000 to 8,000 words. And I will add a few more when I revise it. I added one or two things toward the end that I need to go back and suggest earlier. And it didn't hit me 'till almost the end but my MC needed to change some how or another. So he did, and now I have to go back and show what led up to that change. I included a couple of hints without realizing it.

As I said this one I want to try to get published the regular way. After I revise it--which I want to do this month maybe next too since I have other writing things to do--I will need someone to check for nitpicks. As I've said on other projects I've decided that the writing will take care of itself or not, I could spend months on trying to get it just right.

Looks like NaNo is doing something to help the revision process along in January . Good I could use some of that...depending exactly what they say.

I am going to need a first reader when I finally get mine all the way done--I'm adding chapters and an epilogue. It might be around 70,000 but probably closer to 63,000 unless I can come up with an idea for a yet another chapter.

Posted by LDWriter2 (Member # 9148) on :

Okay just finished one of two new chapters. Actually, its two chapters. I was typing along and reached a point where I said, "Hey that would make a good cliffhanger for a chapter break so I did.

I knew the next chapter would be short, I was right 1200 words but that's okay there is room for very short chapters.

So now the whole thing is approximately 60,000 words long. Even though I picture the last chapter I will do to be three to five thousand words, there is a possibility that the whole thing will be close to 70,000 words.

Posted by LDWriter2 (Member # 9148) on :

A PS here. Just got two ideas that will make my last chapter longer. I started it and something came out I wasn't expecting. Toward the end of the first writing I decided the MC needed to change so I made him too worried about his second job and keeping his Identity a secret. This chapter would be a perfect place to show that. So I am.

A second thought was that this would also be a good place to explain how he got into this second job. I always knew how but wasn't sure where to place it. So there will be a vampire fight after all. A flashback would add words to the novel.

Posted by LDWriter2 (Member # 9148) on :

Okay now I'm done.

Twelve chapters and 68,000 words. Of course I still need to go over it again and I will be adding at least two thousand more words. I guess-imate between two and five thousand more words.

That's about right for a first book I believe.

I had my words when I needed them, but I am still not finished. At around 85k, I'm only at about a quarter of my outline.

Wow, you may have a trilogy on your hands. [Smile] If you use all your outline.
